Help - Seat Belts in S3 SWB

Hi, Only joined today, but, been messing with Landrovers for seven years now! I agree there are many seat belt options, but, could I chuck my hat in the ring? If you are going to the trouble of buying and fitting, you probably want them to save your life, should the need arise.

The standard outer-lower fixing for Series seatbelts is a joke. It should fail the MOT, unless Stevie Wonder has taken up the trade. All seat-belt fixings should ideally have a route, by SUBSTANTIAL STEEL, back to the chassis or main frame of the vehicle. Four quarter inch bolts, through aluminium, is hardly up to the job. An average (not Macdonalds supersize) man, in a vehilcle, hitting a solid mass (tree?) at 30 mph is said to exert a snap force of three tons on the seat belt anchors.

Having said all this waffle, mine are still standard, I am too lazy to do anything about it!

I have just (last weekend) bought a S3 Daihatsu engined Landy, from a banjo player up a Welsh mountain and it has the inertia reel assembly mounted on the outer edge of the seat-box. This is within the gap between the door skin and the seat box. Hard to believe, but, there is room and it does not make contact with the door, even when slammed.

One problem I have often found with retro-fitted inertia belts is that the tension is too severe. Nice to feel safe, but, without being garrotted? Anyone messed with adjustments.

If a pic of this mounting point is of interest to anyone, I will try and post one.

This mounting point would need, at the very least, a good reinforcing plate on the inside of the seat boxes.

The brackets I've seen are long steel extensions that fit onto the original corner fixing points, but are also rivitted onto the seatbox to keep them tidy. So I suppose that's a continuous connection of steel to the chassis rails?

Still trying to find a good spot for mine.
