Having major problem with my 2.5 BMW DSE Raggie, started with having totally flat battery. Bought and fitted brand New Odyssey battery £176.00.
Ran ok for couple of weeks, and one morning when trying to start Raggie message centre went wild with every fault message showing plus beeper sounding until the battery seemed to run out of steam. Conected up to jump start the engine which it did then Alternator Fault shown on info pod. Checked Alternator charging and was not charging battery when running. Bought brand new alternator £111.00 and fitted it, with new belt tensioner ram £25.00. All this seemed to do the trick. But while out driving the Alternater Fault warning came up again on message pod and then dissapaired again as quick as it appaired. Once back home I tested Alternator charging and it was excellent.
Last used the vehicle on Tuesday 19th February 2008,
on the evening of Friday 22nd February, I needed the Raggie again but once it was unlocked there was no sign of interia lights, when key was placed and turned in the ignistion same old problem "All fault messages were shown on info pod and the was no action on the key" I removed the key from the ignistion and the interia started showing some activity but were very dull. I am at the end of my teather with this problem and nobody I speak seems to know what the problem is or what these symtoms point to, and what could be the problem. I only paid £4k for the Raggie in the first place and don't really want to spend over and above what I need to to get it back up and running. Can anybody help me out there? Please!!!

Not sure if this is any help, but is there maybe an intermittant wiring fault between the alternator and the battery?

I'm sure you've checked the wiring, it's the only thing I can think of. Sorry!!

I agree with revjames, double check battery connections.

Not only that, try ANOTHER battery, a duff alternator can damage a good battery (ask me how I know!).

If after this you are still having problems then you will need to investigate further but see what happens if you replace the battery again with another.

The reason you get all the faults on the message centre is because the ECU's are not receiving enough voltage and this in turn then causes the message centre to show faults.

When you tried to start it on the Friday evening and nothing happened did you get a voltage reading at the battery??

Lastly - a Raggie?! :confused::cool:

after reading so far, it sounds like you jumped it with a new battery which you had flattened so start by giving it a good slow charge on a charger and have it tested. if you have killed the battery the cold weather might have killed it completely.

£111 for an alternator for a DSE! mine cost £250 just a month ago, are you sure you have the right one? you need one that pumps out at least 100 amps, preferably more!

It could be the old problem of RF interferance again causing your battery to be drained while the vehicle is left standing. There are loads of threads on here about the reciever causing a battery drain by waking the BECM up all the time. apparantly wireless broadband and remote CCTV are some of the biggest culprits.

The only cure is to replace the reciever with an update version, part number of which is quoted in the other threads.

Just bought one of those wireless energy monitors, next day almost a flat battery, next day, same again, switched off the monitor transmitter, battery ok, just did a sleep-test, waited until it timed-out, switched the transmitter back on, & guess what?? Yep, the BECM 'woke-up' & STAYED ON all the time, until I switched-off the transmitter again, BUGGER, it transmits on 433 mhz, will the upgraded RR reciever cure this??
My electric gates also trigger the BECM, but its only for a few seconds every now & again.

Both battery connection have been cleaned and tested and retested there is no problem there, when running with the new Alternator in place everything tested out fine with a really good charge going into to the New Battery, even with the load switch on the tester activated. My younger brother is a fully qualified diesel engineer with diplomas from such companies as Rolls Royce, Volvo and Perkins, he has his own marine diesel engine & chardlery retailing business. He is also completely re-designed and lectured for these companies on many component parts to do with the marine disel power units supplied by these companies. Even with his expertease in the subject of diesel engines we have hit a brick wall when it comes to the problem i'm having with this. Again today it started on jump cables from one of my other vehicles, I ran it for a around 1 hr driving a distance of around 20 miles. Switched it of and waited a short while before starting it again on the key, no problem. Tonight I have locked it with the key and will look through the window tonight to see if the indicater light is on the gear shift panel if so this will mean the Rf signal is being activated by wondering signals from other things i.e. WiFi Broadband / CCTV / House Alarms / Taxi Radios / Phone Masts etc. I hope its not this because It can run into a lot more money to rectify the problem. But thanks for your comments you and the other guys have restored my faith in humanity, and your motor look great Will's.

I don't have the Bosch altenator, mine's fitted with a Valeo (BMW OEM) unit, I've seen the Bosch ones on fleabay for £85 but never seen the Valeo's cheap anywhere :(

Im getting the same problem with my BMW 528. I havnt been driving it much since getting my defender. I am now on my 3rd battery. Has been taking less than a week to totally kill the battery. So much so that the charger wont begin to charge it.

Don,t know if this helps, but had similar problem on mine, all the warning lights on and would o,t start. Had only left the car for 2 hours. Kept trying and in the end called RAC out as was dark and had to be in Suffolk really early next day.
RAC turned up said flat battery, could not understand as had been running fine previously and had been fine 2 hours earlier. So checked condition of battery.....fine, checked charging......fine, then checked to see if their was a drain on battery somewhere and it turned out the abs wasn,t switching off immediatley, so isolated fuse and every time I turned engine off, I pulled fuse out to reset abs (about 10 times in all) then put back in. Got bored of that so started leaving in it and all seems fine....... so far, if not i,ll have abs looked at for drain of power.

Hope yours is as simple..
