Hi Everyone
I couldn't find anyone locally to test the output on the battery and alternator.
On the basis the alternator warning came up on the dash I have been looking at the prices of a new one, and then keeping the old one re-brushed as a spare. A dealer I know quite well on eBay shows a suitable one factory branded new product. However I have obtained a parts list CD and on that it states Magnetti Marelli A133 in either 100A, 105A or 120A. Which one is the basic one and could I in fact fit any of these?
The one I have on at the moment appears to have no markings unless I remove it which I don't want to do without having the replacement to put on.
Cheers
Bob

Where abouts are you Bob, I know that the Lucas centres known as LSUK these days I think will check altenators out. I think there is a small cost if the unit is ok but they will knock this off the cost of a a replacement if bought from them.

I think they have branches nationally but you need to take the unit off the car for test.

Hi Dorset

I'm in Newark-on-Trent in Notts.

I have seen one on eBay, brand new factory part for under a ton, against 300 plus from Landy dealer.

I think they have branches nationally but you need to take the unit off the car for test.

I think we do actually have one in the area. The problem is taking it off and getting it there. Guess I'm going to have to try. Looks quite easy though.

I was hoping to find somewhere which could check it and the battery in situ to see if anything flags up. Local Landy dealer in Lincoln will do it but it would be cheaper to buy a new car :(

Halfords will check the output for you and the state of the battery.

Thanks Redhand. saw this comment earlier. was going to reply with the results.......

However........

Half way to Halfords it went wrong again

This time though as I was just chugging along at around 30mph in traffic I was able to see exactly what happened.

When I left home there was just a slight sign of a low battery but it fired up on the fourth roll of the engine. All seemed fine. I stopped on the way to pick the family up. Started her up again and she was on full power, no sign of any impending problem.
About half a mile down the road everything went dim, the usual list of malfunctions on the dash appeared, but the engine was still running. Luckily we were about 300 yards (sorry don't do metres!!!) from my eldest daughter's house and I managed to get it there with no problems. By this time everything was totally dim...headlights like sidelights. sluggish wipers, etc., etc.. BUT the engine was still running fine.
I let it tick over for about 5 minutes and then gave it some wellie...still fine...plenty of power but everything still dim to almost extinct.
Switched it off and now no power even to switch on the interior lights.

Walked home...freezing!!!!!:(

So where do I go now? I think it may be sensible to start with the battery. The sudden loss of all things electrical cannot be an alternator surely. As was mentioned by Wills in a previous post, it sounds like a dead plate in a battery. Can't do any harm anyway and at least I can recover it home, and then maybe I will do the alternator brushes too.

Cheers

Warming up with a nice cuppa :)

Paddocks do a new alternator for around £100

Thanks for that Irishrover.
I need to find out what Amp I need. If this is the 120 amp then that is a great price. I have found the 105 amp for a lot less.... new Land Rover part from a surplus store.
Where do I find Paddocks if I need them please?
Cheers
