Set my heart on a Freelander and found a few good ones i like the look of! Question is Do these machines tend to be priced by condition and s/history rather than age?? Prices vary madly and seem to follow no set pattern? (a bit like buying a mini years ago!) So am i best looking for a well looked after example and age isnt a real issue or .......

hiya, i had the same problem when looking for mine, i personally think a comprehensive history is a must ( garage or receipts from diy), & general overall condition
, check for any noises underneath as these can be expensive, have a browse through the threads on here, will give you an idea of issues that can arise, good luck, marytn

Petrols are the cheapest because they are the most likely to have engine problems. L series diesel is a bit more valuable and bombproof engine - that's what I would reccomend of all the engines. TD4 Diesel is the more expensive ones, good engines but can be costly to fix if you get a bad one but generally they are excellent.
I would definitely go for an L series if I were to go round again, much cheaper than TD4 but totally reliable. There are problems common to all Freelanders, which you can read about 'ere:

I would have liked a diesel defender but ended up with a petrol Freelander 3 door for the price I paid it was an absolute bargain, there are good ones out there. It's a machine and like any machine it needs maintained.

Seconded, there are some absolute bargain basement 1.8 petrol Freelanders out there that are crying out for DIY owners to take care of them. I've sorted mine now, only gremlins left are common to all Freelanders and I'll have them fixed soon enough.
