Today I took the defender out for a drive and noticed that the fuel and temperature gauges were not working. Iv done a search and found it could be a wiring problem or the voltage stabiliser unit. my question is where will I find this unit? Sorry if its a dumb question but I know very little about cars electrical stuff. Also noticed a little moisture in the temperature gauge.... could this be the cause?

Check the fuses.

I recently had a problem where one of the left hand indicators filled with water when it rained or was a moist day. So on some days, whenever I wanted to turn left, it would blow the fuse which took out the guages with it.

Not sure what year your's is, but on my 94 300Tdi it was one of the 15Amp jobbies if I remember correctly. Fuse 2 or 3 I think (although I'd have to check to be sure).

As with Diesel72 my gauges often have condensation in them - doesn't seem to bother them.

Earthing issue (behind dash) favourite assuming fuses all OK

Thanks for the replies. Iv had a look at the fuses and all seem fine. Not going to have a chance to look behind the dash until friday, so I will report back when I find out more.

Good luck

Worth checking the fuses with a multimeter or bulb and battery - they can get hairline cracks where they look OK but aren't.

That said, instinct says an earth problem. Even if the earth connection behin the bulkhead looks OK, take it apart, clean up and reassemble with WD40 or copper grease.

Hope you find the cure.

It could very well be an earth problem, The earth connects on to the mounting bracket of the gauge .It all depends if these were run sperately to an earth point or piggy backed from one another and one has failed.
They also share the same +12v from the plug on the wiring harness so could be a fault there, Best to remove the front of the dash and check for 12+ and also check the earth if in doubt run a new tempoary earth.
