Come back from being away for christmas, we lost the turbo completely, managed to get home just about doing 50mph... since then the whistle has got better/quieter and the turbo is boosting ok... however MPG and miles per tank has dropped by about 100 miles a tank???

Had all the hoses off and looked for leaks in that, even had a man out to look over the car and he couldn't find anythign (although not conviced that there not a small hole) but the MPG drop off is odd... Best he could offer was that on the OBD cylinder 3 was showing low compression (or something) blamed a sticking injector...?

Anyone had a similar problem???

Thanks for any advice

cleaned all the plugs the other weekend... changed the air filter and blanked off the EGR valve.. pick up is much better but fuel cons is still down and the whistle is still there...? this has gotta be a turbo leak but would cause the loss in MPG?

Whistles??

Does it do this when you are accelerating just as the turbo boosts in?

Do you have a loss of power after this (or at least described as lazy - like driving as though pulling a massive weight?)

I had similar - leaking intercooler hoses - you won't find it looking at it and difficult to replicate stood still as you need a load on the engine. Mine sounded like an air compressor was wheezing away under bonnet.....

Found loose jubilee clip on top hose near EGR, popped it off and cleaned up, retightened and good as new!

Also check yer vacuum filter int blocked. . . . .LHS back of engine ,looks like an old type glass fuel filter [but its plastic] . . . . .:)

ming found that the other day... should this be just free to air...? as mine is... will check to see if this is issue at the weekend... Cheers

rustymark: Been all over the hoses... removed all but the very bottom ones. reconnected and still the same problem.. I have had the one on the left top rub on the intake mounting and this is my next thing to replace to eliminate it. But yeah todal loss of turbo and whistle or air hiss was very loud now quieter and very much so when accelerating.

Cheers chaps, will have another look at those again

Yes [free to air] this is were the vacuum sucks, so a good test is when motor is running ,stick yer finger up the free to air bit and you should feel it suck, also listen out for a whistle note, this might also indicate a vacuum leak or a split vacuum hose . . .

ok .. so... not much of a suck on the EGR boost bit... replaced the left hand side pipe anyway and the whistle still there... :( should I replace the filter next? proper stuck now...

Also noticed today that the (pardon the lack of knowledge here) Orangey red fluid in the bottle top left (driver side) was hissing once I turned the engine off,... is this normal.. never noticed it before...? Says on the top that it should be 16psi??? at a guess this is the brake fluid due to colour...?

The orange / red fluid is your coolant - and it shouldn't hiss - unless the top is loose or you have an overheating problem. The psi figure is quoted as after this the top will allow steam out or you have a big big pressure cooker.

Could this be causing the whistle? and the issues? The cap was loose so I tightened it till it clicked, but even then just at idle it hisses???

wait for it to cool, crack the cap then take it off completely and run the engine. If the whistling stops then you know for sure that the cooling system is pressurizing - at the moment you seem to be jumping around and not eliminating things on a point by point basis. Also you can look for tin airbubbles in the rservoir which may signify a more serious problem.

Not had time to try this but now I def. lost the turbo :( and under throttle we have what sounds like the heater fan coming on... C**K going to investigate further tomorrow when we have light... also engine warning light ticking on and off on the dash...

sorted... intercooler hose had come lose...

Still got the whilste but think this is the intake thats not tight enough... leaking through the spring clip going to replace that with a proper one

Is it perhaps the engine - radiator coolant?

You are looking at the pressure cap.

NEVER turn it or open it when the engine is hot.

OOPPS!

Missed the post that already said this.
