So me new CV and half shaft arrived today, the hub was all stripped out and ready to go so I thought I'd fit 'em in my lunchtime.

Was really chuffed with myself, got it all back in and together in 45 minutes, only problem - the wheel wouldn't turn. I've stripped it all back and the stub axle seizes up when I put the nip on a bolt that holds the swivel housing cover on (the bit with the tube that the stub axle goes through).

I've taken it back apart, given it a wiggle, knocked the halfshaft into the CV joint to make sure it's all the way home, sworn at it, still seizes as the nip goes on any of the six bolts that hold that cover on.

Any thoughts on why this ain't working? I'm running out of time.

Any and all suggestions, sensible or otherwise, gratefully received.

Are you on about the stub axle bolts Stub axle holds the wheel hub on?? or ias the hub on and your trying to fit the flange that covers the wheel bearings and has a rubber cap over the end.???

For clarity Stub axle

Yeah, it was the stub axle. I'm over it now. I located the stub axle on with a couple of bolts, pulled the CV shaft out as far as possible, then tightened the bolts. All good. Thank feck!

(Well, all good until I take it out for a test drive in ten minutes after this cuppa...)

Not when a one hour job takes all frickin' afternoon.

Finish my cupper, new sumo track rod to go on and road test... Any tips on tracking at home?

long bit of string from the tow ball round the edges of the back wheels and across the fronts in the middle of the outer edge of the tyre, think if you looked down on the landy from above you would be tying the string all round the outer edges of the thing like a bunch of asparagus, then adjust till you get 0 degree toe straight ahead seems ok on my disco

Not sure I quite understand how that'd work, pro'ly my head addled noggin.

Going to clamp 8' 2x2s to each wheel and use a tape measure and see how that goes. I've set the bar to the same length as the old one, but as I don't fink it was quite right before.

Right, another quick cuppa, try that and then road test...
