I have a Freelander 2002 Td4 this is the problem/symptons

On tick over engine runs clean (no smoke).
on acceleration heavy smoke.
on constant revs very slight smoke.

When ticking over and throughout rev range engine sounds sweet as a nut!

However when running there is an obvious build up of pressure in the crankcase, this is evident by removing the dip stick and oil flowing up the Dipstick tube!

If i remove the dipstick and slacken the oil filler cap the pressure is eliviated and the smoking is significantly reduced.

I have ruled out the cyclinder head as the problem as i had a water pressure test done and no leaks -also no oil in water or visa-versa.

I was thinking it could be piston seals but i would expect this to affect the running of the engine and as i said it runs sweet!

I have read on here that there is a crankcase filter which if blocked could (by the sounds of it) be causing this problem!

However i seem to be struggling to find where this is located on the engine! I have scoured my haynes manual and it is no help (no mention of crankcase breather).

So could someone please tell me accurately where it is located and how to change it!
also i keep reading about a BMW replacement? details on that too if poss.

Finally if anyone else has any ideas as to what the problem could be please comment.(in detail).

Many thanks in andvance.

Not visible till you take a few bits off to get to it, recently changed mine to the bmw part, easy enough job if your a practical person, loads of info and pictures on here somewhere,
well worth changing, mine was clogged to a solid sticky mess, it goes a lot better now,

even thought you said yours was running ok you will notice the difference.

haynes : 'emission control systems' chapter .. ( 4C.3 .. in the green cover '53 to 56' version )

basicaly the crankcase-breather lives next door to the m.a.f. .. on top .. at back .. middle ( aprox. )

( once in a while remove the whole cover and clean the vent-valve itself with white spirit .. )

Many thanks to those who replied!

I have to say un-b-l-o-o-d-y believable!

Such a simple fix.
ordered filter of ebay (£8 inc del).
eventully worked out how to get at it and fit.
Instant transformation!
Now i just get the 'normal' wisp of smoke at start up then my babies fine.
To think garages were all saying piston ring/rings had failed (and wife was saying scrap it!) and the best quote was £650 + parts to replace rings.

Next step is to replace the filter with the cyclonic seperator.
Must check glow plugs too!

Cheers guys.

Merry Xmas mate,

You've now got £650 to spend on booze, food, and a present for your wife, who wanted to scrap the 'wonder-machine'.

Singvogel.

It is covered in the Haynes, just not in the servicing section because as already stated it wasn't included in the original servicing schedule.
