HELP!! Oil filled ECU

Hi all, I just took my ECU out to send it to get it remapped by td5 alive and a load of oil came out of it, Ive heard of this problem before but my car had none of the symptoms! my question is is it a DIY job or am i better off getting a specialist to do it? I know theres a guide on here somewhere, anyone know the link? I have reasonable mechanical knowledge, but not much electrical knowledge!

Replacing the harness that the oil travels in can be changed easily. Once you remove the large plastic cover over the engine then the harness is just under the rocker cover.
 
easy peasy...im no mechanic either. Only tip id say is when putting the engine cover back on, put the rubber washers in place as you put it down as i didnt and i spent ages to get it on properly before realising leaving them on as guides was the best way. I also managed to lose one....doh. I followed the disco 2 web link already given, it was great and ive used it for loads of the other problems. I brought the harness from paddocks i think and it wasnt a lot. good luck....
 
ok thanks guys, ive bought the harness now, i know 47quid was a bit steep but at least ive got it in my hand now, rather than waiting for the post! only question ive got left is, how do you get the oil out of the wiring running from the harness to the ecu? I know you clean the ecu end and theres new wiring at the injector end, but surely theres still going to be a bit in the wires running between them? is it best to clean these too? if so how??

If the oil is really bad, just clean the ECU plugs etc as best you can, fit it all back together and after say a month, remove the ECU and clean the plugs again, eventually you will not find any more as its all gone down to the ECU, did mine 2 times, and even the 2nd time there was hardly anything to worry about.

The only other option to avoid doing that (which is only minutes to remove ecu) is replace the engine harness to, but that will hit you for £250 +...........no brainer imo.
 
I just did mine, and the plugs were dripping with oil.
I was so concearned that I took the top of the ECU, but found no oil in there.

Urban Panzers guide and info on this is spot on.

ive just taken it all apart now but the plug on the engine is clean as a whistle and it looks like its already had a new loom?! i bought a bearmach loom and its exactly the same as the one i took out!! could it have been changed and just not cleaned out?? strange!
 
The plug on the engine will be as the oil doesn't go through the plug, it goes past the two blue o-rings then tracks down the loom. They could just sell a pair of new o-rings but of course that isn't as lucrative as replacing the lot.

what ive worked out is when I bought the vehicle it had an overheated engine, so from what I can guess is the person that rebuilt the engine for me has replaced the loom cos it was damaged, and just not cleaned the ECU out! oh well, its got 2 new looms now! haha
 
Hope anyone can help me on this,
I've replaced my injector loom today but am still getting a missfire symptom on acceleration. When i removed the loom from the injectors i had to clean the injectors with contact cleaner as they were soaking with oil, Also the connector on the main loom was cleaned with cleaner as there was traces of oil here. There was no oil on any of the wires near the ECU. Does the wiring to the ECU need cleaning and if so how can i do this.
Thanks for any advice as im at a loss.
