Looking for help. Driving my disco 2 td5 today and it has a knocking noise. After a while of driving pulled over as it was making a kinda ratchet/clicking noise and hard to get into gear. Stopped as noticed some smoke out the bonnet and smell of oil. Left it for a bit now as easy as anything to get into gear once started. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. It's about half a mile from home. Do I drive it? Any one else had this issue.

Sounds clutch / DMF or gearbox related if you are having issues getting it in gear when running. Check oil, coolant, power steering levels (I assume you didn't have an oil pressure light on or overheat?) just to be on the safe side. Make sure it is cooled down and try and make it home slowly. Once you get back I would suggest checking the gear box oil levels, if one of them is dramatically low then you may have cooked it. If G/B oils are ok then sounds like clutch but they don't normally smoke unless you have been slipping it a lot and they also stink a lot!

Have you had any oil leaks from the gearboxes as the levels only ever go down if they have a leak and you don't top them up regularly enough?

Thanks for the response, checked levels at side of road and all appear to be ok. No warning lights came on the dash. Will try and drive it home and see what happens. Haven't driven it yet as wanted to get it to cool right down

Does have a very minor leak. Levels have been all good though. Just hoping not more damage has been done from driving it home, started making funny noise about 10 miles before it gave up
