Help...My electric windows have packed up...leaving the passenger window open about 2". I've looked in the manual for the fuse that controls them but can't find it. I did have a small leak at the top of the passenger window last night but dont think it did any damage cos both my windows don't work which is why i think its a short. It seemed like when it opened it used the last bit of charge, went down 3" then up 1" and now nothing.

Don't really want to leave it out on the street like this tonight so if anyone can help i'd be most appreciative.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with mine on the discovery.Went to the drive through mcd's and the window wouldnt shut again but would go down very slowly. It turned out to be the switch.I took it out and bypassed it and then up she went.
hope this helps.

Thanks for that, but both my windows are dead. Its a 2000 defender and in the book it doesn't even mention electric windows so i think these could be aftermarket. I have no idea where these are wired into. I've checked everything electrical except for the winch (have no idea where thats connected as well  ) may be i'll fiddle around with the split charge system and see what happens! ...and to top it off its supposed to rain tonight!!:(

why dont you just put a 12v charge through it to get it shut for tonight, then work on it when you have the chance.

Does anyone know if you have a problem with one electric window would that stop both the windows from working?
I've checked all the fuses and everything seems to be ok so the next logical thing would seem to be a connection somewhere. However...i don't know anything about mechanics and electrics on cars so i'm learning as i go so all info is greatly received.

Thanks

could be the relay, to check if the relay is working o.k you should be able to here it click as its energised if you cant here it click, first check for a main supply.

ok thanks. The relays are those coloured things under the fuses but can i test by taking them out or just turning things on and listening to them? Is it worth me taking the door panels off to check the connections and how much of a pain would that be? I can see that the wires for the windows go up behind the dash so they must go to the fusebox by the gear stick.

just test your electric windows, see if you spot the relay thats clicking. indicating that power is present.
try to trace the wires that go up behind the dash, must be a fuse in there somewhere. look for the live to and back from the switch's and check earth points.
taking off the door panels is a pain in the arse, the plastic pins end up snaping unless your real carefull.

Thanks MUDDEE. No sound from the relays, the windows are dead. I was going to take the door panel off but dont think i will after your advice. Guess i'll have to take it to someone:( . Thanks
