Help !! my Diff light has come on

Hi guys,
I wrote recently about advice regarding the change of a clutch on my 1998 300 TDI Disco (manual). Everything went to plan so it seemed and yesterday I took it it down the back roads for a spin before I put the centre consul back in. After a minute or so I noticed that the warning light for the diff lit up, as far as I can tell the car drives as it did before only difference is that the clutch is a tad lighter. When I put the props back on I did the tipp ex trick to make sure they were aligned I can't remember undoing anything electrical apart from the ciggi lighter. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Could be that you have damaged the wire somewhere along the way, and now its earthing to a metal part somewhere. Its easy to get it caught in amongst all the workings down there...

Could be that its got wind up from using diff on hard ground etc or when it was being rebult you caused wind up by turning a prop while in diff so much that it caused enough friction to effectivly lock the diffs together (wind up again)... Drive it on some gravel in a tight turn and see if the inside wheels spin on the gravel. You will hear it.

When you rebuilt the console and links for the transfer box the diff was disengaged? Are you sure that the difflock is in the right hand position, hasnt been bumper over?

Thanks for the reply, what would you recommend I check first? to be honest I'm not entirely sure what the diff's do, I don't believe I knocked any wires when messing about with the transfer box but I'll check. But how about the props, do they need to come back out again?

It's possible that just the switch on the transfer box need re-setting. The Diff selector should be engaged 'in gear' when the warning light is set up.

To check if diff lock works, jack up a front wheel and drive off. If the wheel goes round and round the diff lock is off. If it drives off the jack, the diff lock is in.

Or you can try to turn the wheel by hand: you can't if the diff lock is in.

I had a problem with my diff lock after my clutch was changed and I found the linkage and selector switch on top of the transfer box wasn't reassembled correctly. Search the forum, you should find it and there are pictures that may help too. Check the linkage from the transfer box lever and look down from the top (you should be able to see the switch on top of the transfer box by looking down if you have the console out).

Check that the diff is actually on by jacking up a front wheel and turning by hand - if diff lock is engaged, you won't be able to turn it much, if at all.

Just to confirm, if I jack up one of the front wheels as it is, the Hi / Lo is in High and the gear stick in neutral the wheel should turn around, if not then the diff lock is on. Once this has been established I can move on to the next step. When I changed the clutch I used this link which was posted on this site 300TDi Disco clutch change - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum. From what I remember the main gears were in neutral but the HI / Lo I suspect was left in High mode. Any wiser?

Yes that's right for checking if the diff lock is engaged.

And have a look at the pictures. The switch is on top of the box, connected to the transfer lever. When diff lock not engaged the metal thing points forward (12 o'clock), engaged it points to the right at about 2 o'clock position from memory.

Dunno if that will help with your problem but it's worth checking I think.

Nope the Diff lock is definately not on, the front wheel moved round fine. Frogfart mentioned re setting the switch, how is this done?
