Hi, all. I've searched the forum for the answer to my question but can't find what I'm after. my Grandad has a td5 defender 2001 and has just had the abs and traction control lights come on, the code is pump failure 3 4014. But his abs fuse is on a switch (for the snow) and when you turn it on and off the abs resets and works for a while and the traction control seems to work anyway. But the lights only go off when using the fuse switch. Reset the codes properly and they go out until the engine is started. Surely if the pump was stuck then nothing would work full stop svs was replaced v recently. How hard is it to replace the abs pump?? Do they need coding etc?? Sorry for all he questions but I'm a 200tdi man-electrical freedom!!! Bliss!!!

Abs pump is £1200. I have heard recently that there may be companies out there that will re-con the pump, in fact possibly read it on here, for a few hundred. I would expect most of the hassle is involved in undoing all the brake pipes etc, not sure about the electronic side, never got that far, hopefully a fault re set would be enough.

1200!!! I don't think I can't tell my grandad that, not at his age, I though I saw a second hand one on eBay for 150+ Jesus I maybe just pulling the bulbs out for the mot and hoping it passes. Since a discovery svs fitted then will a disco abs pump not fit?? Thanks for the replys by the way

sorry m8, that dont work anymore, abs light is part of the mot now...

what you need to do, is get down maplin, get a 12V timer kit, and attach that to the ABS light, so it comes on, the goes out (set it to about 10 secs) MOT done... :)

of course, you must have the abs working etc etc.... ;)

Ah thanks that sounds like the fix, obviously I want everything going for safety but if I can mod it until we either find second hand or he gets the money to spend on a new unit then that will be great. Cheers for the replys

Have you tried flushing and bleeding the whole braking system including the supposedly high pressure circuits through the ABS pump? LR told me my shuttle valve and pump needed replacing so I did the above and it solved the problem. Total cost was about £30 for brake fluid. That was about 3 years ago and its been just fine ever since. Also LR threw me off the premises when i tried to tell them what the proper fix was. Shysters!

Has anyone had a look at the sensors for cleanliness and fit? I don't know the system myself, but I've seen and read of where the sensor gets mis-aligned or covered in crap and sends bad signals back so the system doesn't work correctly ... Just a thought.

Are you able, without trying to teach you to suck eggs, or belittle you, to do work on it yourself? Even if you are it might be worth having an Independant Landrover specialist give it a looksee .. even if they charge for a report or quotation (NOT estimate!) it might be worth having the abs specifically checked out and done 'professionally'.

PS, I'd take note of what Shifty1962 says, he's often correct ... and it can't hurt much ... can it? ;)

Well the codes from the hawkeye only come up as 1440 pump failure 3 stuck open, sensors seem clean, also when reset the system works for a few goes of the traction control and abs. Also the abs under seat fuse just blew which I'm told runs the abs pump so it does look like a pump failure, cheers I'll try a full fluid flush, I can do a few things lol, do I need Hawkeye to bleed the system?? I have one so not a problem if it is required. Thanks again for everyone's help

Good call Shifty!!!

Now that why I have a TDi

You need a Nanocom (not sure if Hawkeye can do it) to cycle the individual brake circuits when bleeding the ABS. Its how I did mine when I borrowed Ratty's Nanocom. Got my own now as its so useful and does pretty much all I need.
