Hi all, hope someone can perhaps advise. Had a few problems with our N-reg Landy 90 300Tdi of late. Firstly, either the master or slave clutch cylinder seems to have been leaking for the past few weeks – this has led to the clutch having a bit of play at the top end, though nothing that affected driveability. More recently, there has been some squealing in line with the engine noise/revs, most noticeable when decelerating, so not sure if this is linked in with the clutch situation. Today, things came to a bit of a head – in addition to the squealing, now there is an intermittent whistling/air blowing/rasping-type noise noticeable in the cab, and a very intermittent chugging/loss of power. While climbing a hill, this culminated in a bang and full loss of power, but the engine itself didn’t stall at the time. Engaging gears didn’t result in movement and just stalled for a few minutes, but after a bit of playing about with hi/low gears, the car started to move again, with no signs of what the ‘bang’ (which sounded just like the bang of a timing belt snapping – had that before on a Peugeot) was. Noises were still as bad as ever getting the Landy home, so now she’s in evident need of mechanical attention – but anyone any ideas of what the problem(s) might be?

first off the clutch, every clutch should have freeplay its so the clutch cant drag and wear. second the noise check your belt and maybe the exhaust gasket. does it squeak when vehicle is not moving??? the whistling/air noise and loss of power maybe just a turbo hose split or leaking and the bang sounds like it sliped out of high and into neutral on the move if it doesnt do it again dont worry.

Thanks Tat, will get these things checked out. Certainly all got worse today, but not happy to drive it until they're fixed.

There seemed to be extra play in the clutch a few weeks after the leak started, but I've been keeping the clutch reservoir topped up since and it's not emptied since the incident, and the play hasn't got worse.

In terms of the squeaking, it's only when on the move, most notable when decelerating and linked in to engine revs.

Hopefully from what you say, it's not going to cost a fortune to fix...
