Basically my 1987 td Defender has something wrong with it but i'm not sure what it is, so before forking out sending it to the garage i thought i would see if anyone knows what the problem is and the solution.
Here are the symptoms:

1. Noticeable lack of power and acceleration
2. Lots of white smoke when starting engine, hot or cold.(more so then usual)
3. Puffs of black smoke when accelerating.
4. Engine sounds muffled in a way. Not as meaty as it should be.
5. Major shuddering at around 35mph (bottom end of 4th gear) and some shuddering in 5th gear. It's not due to UJ's because I put brand new ones in 2 days ago.
6. When revving the engine it takes about 10 seconds for the revs to go back down to tick over level.

Any suggestions on this problem/problems would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Oli.

Remove the engine breather pipe from the oil filler cap and let the engine run till its up to temperature. Once it is, get some1 to rev the engine while you hold your thumb over the dipstick tube for about five seconds. Release your thumb, and if there's a lot of pressure / your engine sprays oil at you, then its bad news. If there is pressure, it could be cracked piston rings. Tho i thort nick the thieving ba****d was suposed 2 put new ones in! If there is no pressure, its likly that the turbo that has gone. Hope this helps

Have solved the shuddering issue now by re-doing the rear UJ's however all other problems are still present. I tried putting my thumb over the oil filler cap to check for pressure and got splattered with oil. So when the engine is running it spits a fair amount of oil up the filler pipe. Any ideas as to what the problem is would be greatly appreciated because I don't want to give in and send it to a mechanic just yet :D

hmm mite be worth stickin a 200tdi in!! would probably work out the same as a trip to the garage if u did it urself.

Check the timing has not gone out, it's not using water and head gasket gone, but sounds like the engines fooked, low compression. I wouldnt bother with this engine if it is get a turbo as sugested.

After driving my Land Rover today I think the engine is on its last legs. It sounds awful, has terrible acceleration and no power and no speed. Not to mention clouds of blue/white as well as black smoke when accelerating. After reading around it sounds like it could be cracked pistons or something along those lines, however just before Christmas I had 4 cracked pistons so had a Land Rover specialist replace them. Surely it can't be piston related again?

On tick over what does it do?

Also to check timing look at another post done by me today: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/2-5-turbo-timing-76275.html

did they just replace the pistons ?

would be interesting to know what if any other items were replaced (such as rings) and what others works they did while they had the opportunity

someone suggested putting a 200Tdi in - it's a good idea, throwing money at a TD is like ****ing in the sea to raise the water level

The cracked pistons were replaced with second hand ones and a new head gasket was put in, also I think there was a small notch or crack in the head which was filled in.

On tick over it sounds quite lumpy and shakes a bit. It also wouldn't start yesterday morning. I took the glow plugs out last night and cleaned them up to make sure it would start this morning, which seemed to have done the trick. But is still doesn't start that easily.

In regards to sticking in a 200tdi, thats what i want to eventually do, but first need to save up at least 300 quid to buy one. I know someone who can fit it for me for free so that shouldn't be an issue. However whats to stop the 200tdi engine from getting cracked pistons and god knows what a couple of thousand miles down the line. Also i need the car for driving to and from school so im not sure if i could get away wiv not having it for a few days/ a week. All i know is that right now its horrible to drive!

Another option is to take it back to the mechanics and get them to see if its a problem with the pistons again, in which case i would end up with a bill of at least 100quid just for them taking the head off and having a look.

Hmmm decisions decisions

I dont think I would fit a second hand set of pistons to an engine, I would have second thoughts about wasting money even on a new set of pistons without a rebore. And as for filling in a crack?

I think with engine work I want a guarantee, but having gone the way it has I doubt they would have. Twice around the block guarantee.

Sounds like its blown up.

dare i ask how much you paid to have your engine wrecked ?

who did you use to do this work ?

I haven't been given the bill yet  which is why i'm trying to avoid taking my car back there because i wouldn't want to remind them that they still haven't billed me! The person who did it is a land rover specialist and deals with nothing but them, so i would expect them to have done a proper job, but then again i know nothing about engines so who knows!!

I'm not sure what to do now, do i take it back to the mechanic and tell him the engine is f****d and i think (but dont know) that its to do with the work he did on the pistons and engine in general.......

....or do i save up, get a 200tdi, and avoid ever using him again and hope he doesn't remember i owe him money!

I think you may have to go with belt and braces here, if he has your details then he might come after you at some point for his dough, if you take it back and kick up fook indicating that the job was **** then he will have your motor and unlikely that he will admit to fokin it up, and keep it until you cough up.

So chose your course carefully, I think you need another independant record that the engine is fooked, and send it to him if he bills you.

hi there,

it might be completely off, but since it´s an easy check, it´s well woth a try: did you check the air intake tubes, the plastic tubes through which the turbo aspirates? if heard about these tubes collapsing internally, which is most noticably on high revs and causes black smoke, since there is a lot of unburnt diesel, caused by a lack of air.
as i said, might be complete nonsense, but definetly worth a look.

good luck!

juergen....

Thanks juergen, i will have a look tomorrow if i have time. I think that my car has more then one issue so hopefully it is something relatively simple to at least get some power and speed back, fingers crossed!
