Help - jerry can spout in tank!

Well i was being a bit of a clot and filling my tank from a jerry can using one of those new fangled jerry can spouts. See pic -



and the black plastic on the end fell off into the fuel tank! DOH,

so my question is will it affect the fuel pump? And if it will is there any way i can get it out without having to resort to burning it?

i can't really believe that this has happened lol.

You were a bit over eager to get the can in!

Probably stuck in the intake pipe, could restrict flow when filling up at the pump.

I dont no if and how with a freelander but sometimes you can get into tank were the full pump is, I done it with my old scoobie import through a couple of pannels in the floor. Whats your fishing skills like??

under a plate, under the back seat, 4 screws, then you'll see the top off the pump

i know i had to laugh myself lol, i was being a bit of a muppet and didn't really think about it before i started filling

i didn't think that people wouldn't take this seriously as it sounds pretty stupid.

I don't imagine it would do the pump any harm. The pump in my TD5 had filters which would stop the plastic tube from getting into the workings. The size of the tube wouldn't cause a major fuel blockage or anything, so I'd forget about it until I had a reason to be in there and fish it out.

If you do get it out, tie a bit of string to it for future use.

but it will move around and slap the side of the tank when empty, (thumping noise in cabin) and it could mess up your fuel gauge, if it is stuck in the inlet hose, long nose pliers, or a stiff length of wire with a hook on the end should retrieve it.

It doesn't look substantial enough to make any significant "thumping" noises. Also I reckon it would be a chance in a million if it were to get stuck up on the fuel gauge sender, it's shape would let it float off or roll off, and next re-fill would probably dislodge it anyway, however, if it did foul the sender then he would have a reason to go in there and retrieve it.

I was gonna suggest a wire coat hanger and a steady hand...if you had a fibre optic camera handy that'd be good

took the fuel pump out today and had a good ol' look around in the tank couldn't see the pipe so i guess its still in the depths of the filler pipe. Just have to see what happens when it visits the pump.

Will own up to be equally stupid and doing exactly the same thing!!!!!
Possibly a couple of years ago now....
Did the same and removed tank sender unit - couldn't find it, so it still must be lodged in the filler pipe somewhere, no adverse effects noted...
2002 TD4 if that makes a difference!!!!

I'm quite surprised that it would fit down the filler hole, on my old 2000 defender, the actual hole for the filler spout to go into isn't that big, thought the actual filler pipe to the tank is about 3" in diameter.

Your missing pipe is probably stuck in the first bedn it comes to, very few filler pipes are straight. Therefore, as suggested by others, a good fish about with a couat hanger may well find it and fish it out. Or, if it's not too difficult to get behind the interior trim panels inside the car, you should be able to take the filler pipe off at the top end and you'll maybe see it in there.
