I had to change the choke cable on Gertrude today and you'll know what sort of awkward job that is! Problem is once I had nearly finished I noticed that the dash-lights were dim, the wipers seemed to be slower than normal, and the heater fan non-existant! Is it likely that I have knocked an earth cable off somewhere? Or is there an overall general feed line from the battery?

Sounds as if the earth cable is missing and it had been earthing through the choke cable. Why Kidd you need to change the choke cable? They don't usually cause much problem, unless they have been acting as the earth cable!
There should be a short earth cable running from a starter motor bolt to the chassis, and the main earth from the Battery to the chassis.

how easy is it really to do the choke cable? we;ve had to run a universal one around a different way because ours broke, but it dont have the indicator for the choke light....

The old cable was buggered and would not go in properly....New (correct) one is short and I've had to re-route that as well....works better though!

I've sorted the earth issue- I had oldest son top up the engine oil while I was doing cable and he spilt oil over alternator!!! Now cleaned and working fine(ish -until the next time!!!)

Have you got a Webber carb? The standard cable is very tight with them.
