On Sunday I bought a series 3 diesel 109, (off eBay) and we got her home kicked her up and she was fine, next morning she wouldn't kick over, so my first thought was battery, so I went an bought a new Bosch battery fitted it, still no joy, next thought has she got any drink? So I went and bought two jerry cans full and dumped them in, I'm really not a god with engines and was hoping to learn from my new toy but I can't even get her running the starter button isn't wired in properly but it still turned over the night before, maybe it's me maybe I'm not starting her right I'm not sure. Please please help her pre-MOT check is tomorrow, with my local car mechanic! It's not even trying to start......

Is there a switch to activate the glow plugs? It's rather cold at present so you will probably need the glow plugs.

Does the engine do anything when you press the start button? Can you hear the starter motor trying to turn it over?

To ask the obvious, but, i imagine you'll need the key in the ignition turned to the right point and then press the starter button - have you got the key in (sorry to ask the obvious, but, worth a check)

Hey mate thanks for the quick reply, I have the key in an I've tried it all the way round to the cold start position and tried after a minute, but the starter tries to work you can here it clunk and then it just dies off after a while, I seem to think its something to do with the battery I don't know why I just got that feeling ....

Yep, as Martin suggested, sounds like a electrical issue.

I'd suggest trying to run a thick cable directly to the starter motor from the positive, one directly to the engine for the negative then two thin cables, one to the starter motor solenoid and one to the fuel cut off valve.

This is technically all you need to start the engine.

If you don't have any thick cable, purely for testing purposes you could use a jump lead to connect the earth and main starter motor. If the engine starts you will need to disconnect the starter solenoid cable else you will destroy the starter. I also would not leave it running for very long using the jump leads.

If this still doesn't work you've either drained the battery through your playing to date (or through a faulty short) or have a dead starter motor.
