Has anyone any experience in sorting out a diesel fuel pump?

My land rover keeps running short of fuel. I have replaced the fuel pump and primed the system (which allows the engine to run perfectly for five minutes before running out again!

I believe that the engine does not pump the lift pump - could something be missing inside the engine block? Does anyone know how the system works (a diagram would be great!!!!

sounds like air in the system , after it stops how do you get it started again?

the spill rail that connects the injectors to the fuel is a good place to look for leaks

I agree it must be air in the system. I prime it, which fills the filter and allows it to run for the five minutes before it empties again!

Is it possible to fit the fuel pump with the operating lever on the wrong side of the cam? The parts list shows a different operating lever from the manual, one looks like it goes over the cam, one looks like it goes under. Never had to take the one off my series so I don't know. Might explain why you can prime it but it doesn't pump with the engine running. I did this once on a car I owned but I can't remember which one.
