Hi I am at my wits end......recently bought a TD4 Freelander....105k miles
Shortley after purchasing starting in cold very difficult.....in the end refused to go at all.
Had computer check....rear fuel pump failed. Got it replaced under waranty......better but still tricky whwen cold. I checked out CTS cleaned contacts etc bingo started great.............
Now engine has conked out again!!! Won't start...........new fuel pump
buzzes couple of times on start up, but intermediate pump on wheel arch
seems to keep rotating and not cut off.....is this normal. If I keep cranking engine....it will sometimes catch for say 1or2 seconds and then die.
One thing did happen that was unusual the main relay appered to buzz
on a couple starting attempts.......
So my thoughts are possibly secondary pump, possibly relay failure (is this common). As an asside to this I have ordered a new CTS - I am convinced the current one is feeding engine duff info.
One last thing....I did notice when it was last running power above 2500revs appeared to be dropping off almost like it was limiting itself......
is this limp home mode????
I'm really fed up ......... I hope somebody can hopefully help me....

How recently bought? Give it back as unfit for purpose until they fix it and take a another car as a run around whist they do!

Dont forget its not just fuel but air too that runs an engine...

Hi thanks for your comment........yes of course it is going to be returned.......and a this is a real hassel. Can you answer this ..... should the diesel pump under the bonnet on wheel arch cut out once up to pressure. Mine just keeps on running ..... like its not getting up to pressure......i would have thought with the ignition on it should pressurise and cut out????

If you have a wheel arch pump do you mean in the rear of engine bay or the rear arch on the off side rear. If its the engine bay then which pump was changed as its normally the pump in the fuel tank that will be the problem. The later TD4s 2002 onwards have only one pump in rear arch. Once started does it run fine as if so look at a leaking back injector common fault.

Hi I have replaced the fuel tank pump. The other pump is located in the engine bay.......with my igntion on it just keeps wheering away.....I would have thought it would have reached pressure and then shut off....shoulfd this happen???? My theory is yes obviously my fuel tank pump failed....but could this have strained and starved the pump in enginebay wheel arch
(next to filter) which has subsiquently failed.......can you comment....

What normaly happens when the tank pump fails it puts extra preasure on the secondary pump and takes that out as well, thats why the later models only have one pump. So it would look like it could be the problem

Hi booboodag ........ yes these were my thoughts......the symptoms i currently have feel like fuel starvation very similar to the fuel tank pump failure.

I guess when my first pump failed it caused the engine bay secondary pump to scavange......with little of no lubrication...........

I will be discussing it with Landranger services and the car dealer I bought it from.

Cheers....are there any threads on this you have come across.....

you will find a few posts on here about it. We have had this problem on a few that we have had in. Funny with all the problems the wife still insists on driving our TD4, will not look at my Defender

hi there sorry this isnt an answer to this question but my 2001 freelander td4 is also dead. have checked both fuel pumps all seems ok changed filter got fuel tothe injector pump but not to the injectors ; when i turn on the ignition there is fuel coming out of the return but when i turn it over nothing feeding the injectors so before i fork out on a new pump can any one tell me what is the valve /solenoid at the back of the pump and could this be the problem? any help would be appreciated . once again sorry for the intrusion

hi ive got similar probs with mine just had it checked out and apparently the secondary pump:inner wing; is at fault tofeed the high pressure pump it runs at 2bar mines only doing 1 and a half so im getting 1 on monday hope this helps
