Look mate i was merely trying to advise people.
I advise you to take a professional off road course very soon as you really dont seem to understand the basic techniques and principles of off road driving.
Any training company in the country will tell you exactly what I have so I dont really see how you can argue with me.
I am not going to argue with someone who wont listen to a professional who has trained some of the biggest utulity companies in the country.
I admire your bollocks for taking me on but your knowledge and practices leave a lot to be desired.
Do you actually understand what a differential is fitted for?
I dont understand how you can think that driving with your diff locked can cause more damage if unlocked. When locked you have spread the load between the two axles. If one wheel spins it wont sit there spinning because you still have the other axle driving you.
What do you think will happen when the single wheel spinning bounces and finds grip?
In eleven years with our vehicles running with centre diffs locked we have never had a breakage on site. Even with people like you who just dont seem to understand coming on courses.

fook off numpty. I've seen loads of diffs & halfshafts snapped shattered and otherwise ****ed. and they were all done with the difflocked usually on a really steep hill or in thick mud.

That is not because the diff is locked that is driver error not selecting the right gear.
If you use first gear up a hill of through thick mud you are using maximum power breaking something. By using a higher gear you are using the vehicles momentum and less revs therefore likely to be more successful.
I have rarely seen breakages this way, if you have seen so many then there are a lot of people out there that really dont know how to drive properly.
I really think the numpty here is you.

So why do Land Rover themselves recommend that difflock only be engaged when traction is lost, or likely to be lost, and is dis-engaged as soon as the difficult surface has been crossed?

I've been driving Land Rovers off road, on an almost daily basis, for 40 years and I very very rarely use diff lock. I've never broken a diff or half-shaft either.

Because traction is likely to be lost as soon as you have come off a hard surface.
Anything other than a hard flat surface could be classed as a difficult surface.
We will agree to disagree on this I think. Obviously my professional advice is not good enough for people who already know everything. :)
Merry Christmas.
