Three days ago the car just died. Having just left town I accelerated from 30 - "Unsure"; its something I have previously done post passive DPF re-gen just to see if any light smoke is issued. If there was, after that all is normal and all ok.
I say not sure of the attained speed because I was watching the road and rear view mirror; normally it would be around 60- 70mph.
All of a sudden the car seemed to slightly "lunge" like very briefly touching the brakes, the engine had cut out and we just drifted to a stop.
Tried to re-start a couple of times but no go, I could hear something "turning" but but not very loud and definitley no metallic clunking noise. Got a restricted performance but as we were half in & half out of a live lane on a busy dual carriageway we got out the car to safety.
The car was recovered to the Independent Garage I use & we collected a replacement car and were on our way in one & 1/2 hr to a booked event.
I have heard of "Limp / Safe Mode" but never experienced it thankfully.
My initial thought was that I may have over done it with the acceleration, & over rev'd it; but is that possible.
As the garage is flat out for a few days I'm still awaiting new's, I am just dreading bad news and wondering if anyone can shed any light at all of what could possibly have gone wrong, & could it be a "something needs re-setting" Definitely clutching at straws, any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

As above. The most likely cause of this breakdown is catastrophic crankshaft failure, which is pretty common on this engine.

Mate, your cranks probably snapped..

Thats not limp home mode, I'd prepare for the worst
Thanks for replying, been reading a fair bit regards owners complaining about that, its hard to believe that a brand name like LR would except such a weak point failure. When a bit more investigation has been done & if that's the issue, I aim to contact LR and report as a "Known Problem" then see what happens, I already assume what the answer will be.

You may be very lucky to get a partial contribution if its fully serviced up to date at LR dealers but even then you'd still pay more than getting it sorted yourself.

Very well known issue but JLR are never going to do the right thing in this country, far too much water under the bridge now.

**** situation for you if it is the crank, hope you get sorted as painlessly as possible.

Have a look at LRTime on YouTube, german couple who have done a couple of tdv6/sdv6 rebuilds. Loads of detail to keep you more well informed if you're shopping around for the work

Hi lynall. My car is due to be moved to a garage with facility to remove body etc, expecting the worse. I know this is still clutching at straws but; I went to remove personal stuff and took my Foxwell 640 scanner as so far it hasn't been done. I got a PO341 A 1 DTC. Crankshaft position sensor circuit A.
After reading further details, it appears this sensor can go bad and literally stop the car running. Everything I read referred to not starting, etc, check electrics connected to ecu; nothing I read mentioned a snapped crankshaft or cam belt, tensioner / idler.
Its got me thinking / hoping, that it might (just might) not be engine death. In the centre consul a lever with a red tape attached has been "pulled" and the display has "N" I assume neutral for the recovery. I have no idea where the CPS is located to maybe test it for a resistance reading. Am I expecting to much. PS,what or where is QP

Not done one, but have read you can do them in situ from underneath, take a look at the d3forum, join (its foc) and try a search for cps.
Lets hope that is the issue, good luck.

I've located the CKP sensor on the workshop manual (sdv6 pages) it apparently reads data from a CKP ring, that has 60 - 2 poles and the timing of the passing of the two missing poles feeds back to the ECU were it gets acted on. Not having scanned the power train, I feel it is being diagnosed from the top down, Belt> idler> tensioner> crankshaft. Rather that eliminating a sensor first, after all that's what they are there for. Fingers crossed but not holding my breath.
I'll have a look at the D3 / foc. Thanks again.

Hello to all who offered good input to my original post and subsequent thoughts / hopes.
After a fairly lengthy wait, only due to garages (two involved) being really busy & getting me looked at.
The problem is the R/H camshaft/s linking chain had snapped, dare I say what a relief. Having changed the timing & aux belts plus idlers & tensioners myself last Aug I was waiting for the inevitable Tut! Tut, should never have taken it on.
The garage confirmed everything was as it should be.
One of the cam shafts had a couple of teeth striped because the broken chain got jammed below the tensioner; so it is currently being re-built and needs:- two camshafts, a chain & tensioner, replacement "cover / manifold" gasket etc.
I'm certainly not expecting a cheap fix; but given the other possibilities, timing belt or tensioner failure or the death of the car with crankshaft failure, I do feel I have got away with a bill, but will still have a 2013 D4 sdv6 in good nick with 75,000 miles on it.
In the few years I have been a member; I have had heaps of help from the generous and very knowledgeable members of this forum, & I thank you all.
Having reached 73 & sold the big twin axle caravan last year, probably time to down size & save a few quid on tax / fuel....
