Help - can't stand the heat, and where's that oil coming from?

Hi All,

Took the new landy on a trip to wales this weekend, 320 miles covered, no problems.... BUT, it gets bloomin warm in the cab - it seems that the gap where the middle seat goes is getting increadably hot. I thought it was the gear box at first, but the gear stick only gets mildly warm... The ally in between the seats gets almost too hot to touch!

So, Now we're back I thought I'd have a look underneath and see if I could identify the reason. I'm not sure if it's connected, but a "box" appears to be leaking oil onto the exhaust. Am I right in thinking that it's the transfer box? Could this leak be causing something to run dry, and therefore get hot?

Can this be fixed!?!

Here's some pics of the underneath:

and then off topic slightly, but incase they're relevent:

a pis of what I think is the hydro fluid reservoir for the winch... under the drivers seat:

And then a picture of the gear box, because I'm suspicious about the hole underneath it. I'd sort of assumed that it must be a sump plug hole (it's threaded) and that the oil much have all come out. According to a garage, it's just a drain hole for if the gear box oil leaks into that side... does that sound right?

Thank you all very much in advance, Hopefully the news wont be too bad. :(

T box inspection plate gasket looks like its gone. drain fluid, replace gasket DONT do the nuts up overly tight, this tends to warp the cover not giving a good seal. Do this soon as there is not much fluid in the T box (2-3L).

Hydro res tank, I take it you have a 110 if there is no fuel tank there :) nice good size that one.

hole is fine, its to drain out fluids, but you may want to plug it for deep wading to stop debris getting up there.

ow yer heat...

when its hot next time, get under and feel the handbrake drum. if its roasting then it could be that rubbing. my old 90 did it once and it was a PITA.

Brill, I'll order a gasket asap.... hope it will take me to work and back ok tomorrow (50 miles round rip)... I also hope AMD 4wd will stay open for me to collect the part after work... I assume I'm going to need some sort of gasket sealent too - oh, and the Tbox oil... what type is it? EP180 is the only 'special' oil i've ever used, but that was in an old massey.

yeah, it's a 110, but the winch isn't working at the mo - the chap said the reservoir is almost empty - need to have a play, but the tbox thing is a lot more urgent.

I'll also check the brake drum again next time, it was warm, but not boiling.

might be worth just using sealant if the plate is warped.

EP90 in the T box. check the level before you go to work. it will likely need topping up if its been leaking for a while (Which it looks like it has!)

Brill, thanks very much!

Just for completeness - do you think this leak could be causing the excess heat? Or is it more likely to be the brake drum?

Thanks

i think ive got a similar problem! just completed a 300mile round trip. Trransfer box was nearly hot enuff to fry an egg on!! doesnt leak when cold but as the oil warms up it starts to leak. will have to hava look wher its comin from :S

that transfer box look like it is leaking from the front out put seal, as the oil is thrown round as far as the chassis.
Also looks to be a small leak from the rear out put and its hard to tell wether its the other leaks or maybe from the inspection cover as well.

All easy jobs there is a "how to" on them.

If there is oil coming out of the "drain" hole at the front in the bell housing then you have a leak from the main crank seal on the back of the engin. May well be tracking down to there though as it the lowest point.
Its an gear box or engin out job as its behind the fly wheel, best done when doing the clutch. If its really as bad and needs doing the clutch gwet contaminated and will need changing anyway.

If you Change / fill both gear box oil and transfer box oil it dose make a diffrence. Heat and easyer to change.

Right, as you can see from this thread:

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/tbox-gasket-replacement-sealant-113222-2.html

I've sorted out the inspection plate gasket (fingers crossed), but it had at least 2 litres of oil in it, so I don't think that was the problem.

after the 25 mile drive home from work, the centre brake drum was quite warm, but not red hot - but then after only 25 miles the interiors bit in the cab wasn't that hot either..... hmmmmmmm

As for the leaks - :( - have I bought a lemon? I thought that with a half decent, if neglected, chassis - and an engine with only 105,000 miles on it, I couldn't go far wrong.

On the oil leak note.... the chap I bought it off did say that garage had traced the oil leak (last week) to a lift pump in the engine bay, and the oil was working it's way down from there - does that sound feasable?

I have a mate with a steam cleaner, so I'd better get that on the underside of her, and see what's what.

I apologise in advance for all the noob questions :)

Hi All,

Right, well as suggested I steam cleaned the bottom of the landy this evening. It's only a rough job, as I was borrowing a mates kit, and it put him out as bit - pplus i was lying on the floor with a 5 foot long spray nozzle - not the easiest thing to use under a landy!

anyway, the leak had returned having got back from work today. Oil was dripping from the lowest point again (tbox inspection plate bolts), but you could see a trail around the edge of the gasket, then up somwhere else - so I don't think it's my new gasket - although it could be...

anyway, after the steam clean, I drove the 4 or 5 miles home, and the little leak was starting to trickle - thought I'd take a few more snaps and if any of you had any idea?

The first couple are shots looking directly up from the floor:

then a few shots look down the length of the chassis, with the leak visible in the middle-ish, between the 2 castings which are bolted onto the tbox

then a shot of the sump, and of the PTO doobry, just whilst I was there, and incase anyone spots a problem:

As always, your wisdom would be greatly received!

thanks

From looking at your pics could be a couple of place the oils coming from ( I take it the oil smells like cats **** ? = EP90 ) .
you might have blocked breathers for your box ... ( oil gets warm , air expands , blows it out the easyest place it can ) . If it was me Id take up your floor plates and tunnel and check your breathers , ( pain in the ass otherwise , and with that much **** over your box you prob wont find it anyway .) .

My tranny box leaks out of the centre shaft O ring seal ( you can just make it out in pic 4 ( the recessed shaft dead centre of the pic ) . but it only a drip or 2 after a 40mile trip so not too worryed .

Get back under the oid girl and steam the hell out of the engine and box so you can get a better idear of where its coming from .

yeah I did wonder if it was coming from that little recessed bit above the bolt which you can see in the middle of pic 3? I couldn't feel any oil coming out higher up.... yeah it smelt a bit 'orrible under there. but i just put that down to the steam cleaning moving the old crap around, and then the exhaust heating it up.

I'll have a look at removed the floor/seat bottom panels this weekend, and the gear box tunnel - it'll be interesting for me to see if nothing else.

Sadly I don't reckon I'll be able to use the steam cleaner again for a while... it's just a bit like that round our way ;) I'll have to wait till I've done him a couple of favours.

well, steam cleaning seem to have increased the oil drip. On the plus side, after 45 mile drive to gaydon today, it had chance to push through a nice steady drip of oil, so I could tell that it was clean EP90 - being as I only refilled the tbox on monday night, I imagine it means that it's deffo the tbox - at least that narrows things down a bit!

I'm gonna try and give her a clean up with petrol, or with detergent & hose or something over the weekend to track it down.

Is it an easy job to replace the centre shaft O ring seal?

Thanks
