Hi, my daughter recently bought a 1991 200tdi defender. The power steering didnt work cos the belt was slipping. The new belt I got doesn't fit & I'm not sure if it's because it's the wrong belt ("only 1 we have for that car") or someone's bodged it & moved stuff around. Pictures of others I've looked at on the internet all seem to be different! Hopefully the picture I've got will upload ok, forum stuff is all new to me!

Are you sure it's a 200 not a 300 and what are you asking actually if the pulley system looks correct, you could try getting a piece of string and run it round the pulleys to get a true measurement then marry a belt upto it. Have you checked the pump is ok and the pulleys are turning with the engine and not slipped the key.For a 91 it could be anything honestly as with all landys it's trial and error but fixable.
Cheers and good luck

I just wanted to check that the belts were fitted correctly. I.e. 1 belt around crank, water pump, power steering pump, & the small 1 crank to alternator. Some pictures I've looked at have the small belt crank to power steering.
Thanks for the replies btw

Having had another look it looks like the alternator & the ps pump are not fitted where they should be

Looks like disco 200 lump running a defender 200 pas pump in the correct def position but on home made brackets with a std a127 alternator in the disco position but on homemade bracketry?

The alt mod is quite good as the std disco one is a pita to keep tensioned nicely and always ends up squealing.

The pas pump mod not so good as its also a pita on the 200 def to keep tensioned nicely but worst of all the def pas pump costs twice as much as the disco version and they dont tend to be available 2nd hand unlike the disco ones, the belt wrap on the crank pulley is very poor so poor Im actually surprised the pas pump doesnt make the belt squeal non stop.
I should also point out the pas normally runs a 1/2 belt and the alt a 3/8 belt and you have a 3/8 belt on the pas set up hence the reason why its running in the bottom of the pulley grooves.

Ps if you have a decent bearings factors near you they will be able to measure what belt you actually need, and when you find the correct one buy two of each and keep in the car for spares.

Just looking at the pic again and would say you could either go back to std disco spec with 2md hand ebay parts or move the alt to where the a/c pump would be and stick the pas pump where the alt currently is this would give you decent belt wrap.

That was the conclusion I came to ref homemade brackets. When you say go back to standard could you please post me a pic of what standard actually looks like! I know I'm a pain but there seems to be so many variations I'm at a loss to which one I'm supposed to be looking at, or where the belts should go!

This is a std disco lump, the pulley that both belts run on is the pas pump which also acts as an idler for the alt, I reckon selling the def pas pump and brackets may pay for the parts you need

The main belt on the standard Defender 200 runs the alternator & fan from the back of the crank pulley (ie nearest the engine) and the PAS belt runs off the front pulley. In your photo it doesn't look like the fan lines up with the alternator & crank, but it might be the camera angle?

Well thanks guys for all the replies/help. Will have to have a think which way to go from here but will keep you posted.
Also, just so you know, I have a 1988 3.5ltr V8 110, so it's a given I'll be asking more Q's of you in the future! Though (touch wood) all's fine & dandy with mine atm
