Im in the market for a Defender 90 Diesel 1998+ and sort of have an idea what to look for, never having owned a 4x4 this is my first

Any tips or hints of what to look for will be appreciated as i trawl through the rust infected population that plagues Autotrader

Hi, welcome. For my part, it is great learning before you buy your final truck so if your going to beat it up, get something cheap and cheerful until you learn the trade. Other than that, standard checks, bulkhead, good gear change with no backlash, chassis no holes, cross member in good shape and watch out for any dodgy smoke from exhaust at start up and running. Loads more of course so best taking someone with you on purchase that can challenge and review...good luck
