Hello Y'all

Hi,

I do not have a Land Rover at present, however I will hopefully remedy this later in the year. I have been lucky enough to drive quite a few of them over my 23 years of Army career, however now I will be looking for one of my own.

I do a fair bit of field sports and shooting, so while my yearly mileage wont be huge, my future purchase will need to be able to get to where I need it. I am open to either a 90 or 110, however my main criteria will be a solid chassis and reliable (I know I would be better looking for unicorn poo or hens teeth).

Ive joined the forum to learn more about my future purchase, enjoy the banter and possibly find the vehicle that suits from a member, which will hopefully bring me the piece of mind that I am after.

If you find any, be it on ebay or elsewhere just start a thread about it in it's respective subforum. Hopefully you find yourself a nice one. Are you definitely for a 90/110 or going older?

I am hoping there is lots of advice and everyone is friendly, as after looking at a few threads on here I am realising just how little I actually know about Land Rovers.

I am near Andover, but know Basingstoke well too. I was thinking 90, but want the room in the back of a 110? I know I would want to get one with a decent engine and chassis/bulkhead, as those will be the things I couldn't do myself. All the other extra add ons I would be willing to try myself.

I wouldn't mind the body work being a bit beaten up, but really want a sound and solid vehicle. I am pretty clueless about the engines (200/300tdi)and about what other issues/must haves in regards to anything else. I suppose it will be a steep learning curve for me.

So I assume you have not fallen into the abyss that is Landy ownership yet then.....Go on do it, you may regret it and be near to tears at times but at others you will be grinning ear to ear...Or have I just said the to make myself feel happy about having one...LOL.

A 90 will be a little more manageable around town, though a 110 wouldn't be exactly difficult. If you really need the extra space then go 110. I'd love to get a 109 eventually, in my 88 at the moment.

Have a good look around ebay and the likes, post any prospective purchases here and we can have a gander.

I highly recommend finding someone to take with you that knows about landies and can give you an unbiased assessment. They can be money pits, the good news is they have been teaching owners to be mechanics for 70 Years.

Ive not fallen into the abyss just yet, I reckon it is still a few good months away unfortunately. That isn't too bad a thing though as it gives me time to decide on what I actually want, what is important and what isn't, and what I am actually looking to spend. I cant believe just how well they hold their value.

I def was a Fender, and no other model, and while I wont be ragging it over the rough stuff, I will hopefully be using it to get to and from any shooting grounds, and venturing in to pick up whatever I get. I know I could go many different routes to do this, such as L200, Jimmy, etc, as they all have the capability pretty much, but I have always wanted a Fender and seeing as I am 45 next month, I wanna do it before I am too old to enjoy it.

I think when the time comes to actually start looking for the purchase, I will hopefully have built up the connection to drag a poor sole with me for a look see, after I have of course obtained everyones opinion on here first

Now, I think the most important thing is what do I say to SWMBO and how do I get any purchase past her?

I whole heartedly agree with this. I originally wanted a Defender but ended up falling in love with the old series 2a. None of that freelander rubbish. A proper landy. Good luck finding one, when you do, let us know. I'm not knowledgable enough to be of use in an inspection but i'm sure someone else here would be happy to assist
