hello need advice

i have a defender 90 td when you put your foot down it puffs out black smoke but dose not burn oil i think it could be injecters my question is is it injecters and if so change one or change them all and can you test them also is about 24 to the gallon about right

I have a Pug diesel which puffs out black smoke - especially if you have been pottering about ie not using Turbo. If it's really bad, could be a fuelling problem or air intake. If it passes an MOT, I wouldn't worry about it.

Could be the pump timing slightly out as well.

Black smoke usually means unburned diesel, but the first thing I would do is get hold of a can of injecter cleaner. I've had great results with 'FORTE', it's about £10 per can.
Just bung it in with a tank of diesel and run it through. It gets rid of all the 'varnish' which builds up on / in the injecters, and can make a huge difference.
