Hi everyone, just introducing myself and also looking for a bit of advice.
I'm looking for a very capable off-road SUV, so spent a bit of time researching different Land Rovers and Range Rovers etc. I wanted the off road capability because I'm interested in semi-serious overlanding, but wanted something very comfortable to use as a daily driver. I live in London, but want to travel out to a few far flung places.
Any and all advice welcome and appreciated.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm not a Land Rover owner (yet), trying to decide whether I should buy a Disco 4 / Disco 5 or a Range Rover L405. I understand all are very capable off road and make superb long distance tourers, but was hoping to strap an expedition roof rack on the top along with a tent and then disappear for weeks at a time. Any advice?

Welcome to LZ! :)

All very expensive, and probably not as good as a Land Cruiser.

I think you would do better to post about that in the Range Rover section.

Welcome:)

so how far & flung.
As ^^ ask in Range Rover section. if you don’t get the right one

with a tent and then disappear for weeks at a time. Any advice?

it could well happen With the wrong one:)
nothing is a problem for a well maintained one. Problem is getting one and trusting in it:)

Thanks for replies. Planning a trip through Spain, across to Sardinia then down to Sicily then across Italy, Greece then back up through Europe. About a month of camping and touring in total. Wanted some comfort as driving is a huge part of the experience, but also in a vehicle that was very capable on not so great roads, but also venturing off the beaten track. etc. Also want the option to be able to sleep in the vehicle (if the tent idea fades). With the Disco 4/5 I think it can take a grown adult when all seats are folded down. But was unsure about the Range Rover. Thanks

Hi there and welcome! I think a lot depends on how far from civilisation and garages you're going to be when you say far flung places.. Tajikistan?!
Edit: missed your last post :p

You say 'not too far flung and away from a dealer' like I'm going to need one. Gulp, Should I just consider the Land Cruiser as Turboman advises?

One of the reasons I suggested a Toyota is that the parts are easier to find in far flung places.
Not so much of an issue in Europe, I was thinking Africa, South America, etc.
The Toyota will usually need less parts too, but most vehicles will experience the odd failure or bit of damage on extreme terrain.

I wouldn't do 10s of 1000s of miles toward Mongolia where the nearest blacksmith is a week's walk away in an L405 without serious backup, think you'll be perfectly fine wherever you go in Spain, Italy Greece etc with whatever mode of transport you choose. It's not the end of the world if you lose an abs sensor 20 miles from Almeria, for example

I said you need 1 you know is well maintained and trust.
We would get in ours and drive back to the U.K. (if we were allowed) tomorrow and We wouldn’t think a second if we had to.
Done the journey a few times with absolutely no issues so it can be done. That’s 3200 miles round trip plus some messing around in the U.K. oh and pulling trailers back.
Don’t be put off by some of the horror stories, they eat miles for breakfast, dinner & tea.

ask in the sextion suggested for others input, some dont come in here.

Would that be trailers with a fully equipped and stocked Landrover workshop in? o_O:D

Nope that would have been horse boxes with fully equipped kitchens for cup of tea and bacon butty in the morning.

No spares used:)
Actually the white 1 came back on another trailer that was picked up in Germany then towed by the L322, and the P38 took the black trailer the rest of the way. So reliability is down to owner input:)
