Hello from South Manchester

Hello all I'm from South Manchester and I currently have a t5 campervan and a Porsche boxster, I am going to be selling both of these and buying a 2011 ex utilites 110 as I'm hoping to start building a house in the next year
Has anyone got tips about these vehicles? I am a little concerned about the side shutters and after the house it built I think I might turn it into an adventure camper

Welcome to the forum. I have seen other threads where they say they are quite noisy (rattles) but then again, a Defender is noisy as standard!!

Hi and welcome!

I’ve got no experience of ex-utility defenders so can’t comment on the roller shutters. I would have thought that it would be a good buy as it would have been maintained well by the utility company during its ownership. It looks a nice straight vehicle.

Yes it has been serviced every 8k miles and from the pictures it looks rather straight for a workhorse, after all there is no point in me getting an immaculate defender to use as a workhorse myself

That's awful! I am a bit paranoid about it getting stollen, what would be the best way to deter theives

Mine wasn't smart like that one either. They are easily stolen compared to other vehicles of same value. Mine was used to pull out cash machines then dumped

There's two big problems:

It's known they're easily stolen so difficult to defer that image from wot a theif already knows.

Fellow owners buy lots of second hand parts. Even some on ere have bought engines with the number ground off.

Yer cant fully protected it but yer can hide it out of sight in a garage. Fitting a tracker helps yer know where it went when stolen. Other options like vibration and motion sensing alarm to warn of tampering.

Lock it up somewhere that is secure. (As possible). If you put an immobiliser/kill switch on it and they try to take it, they will cause more moneys damage than if you just gave them the key. If you do nothing Itl just be gone. You can only do what you think is necessary to make it too much hassle to steal - they are opportunists

Rattling roller shutters can be cured by fitting brushes along the edges - there's a company in Oldham who specialise in such things - Dover Vanguard - IIRC these shutters are called "roof shutters" ... ? ( no affiliation, just a satisfied customer

)

Loads of threads on here about anti theft - but the tracker seems about the best bet - there's a long running thread on here about them too - from the silly money all singing all dancing type, to the cheap as chips "home made" ..... you pays your money and ....

Awesome! I work just outside Oldham so can pop in there, have you got any pics of yourey defender with the shutters?

The roof shutter I had was on a foreign POS pickup, which fell in half ! ...... So, er, best leave that particular story there !!

I'm too tall for a Deafener

, and don't do manuals due my health

, so have a D1

- but also have a few roller shutters about the place - hence knowing a bit about them - even got some bits left over

...

The roller springs can be tightened too, and seals which also quieten the "slats" are easy to replace - they look like hollow aluminium extrusion in your picture ... I've even got some of that left over

and some runners ... and
