Hello all, new to the forum but not Landrovers, I bought my first in Landrover when I was twenty, in 1967, a 1948 SWB with ring pull TFR box for £20, I sold it about 1976 for £17 with a cracked block after the head gasket went. One of my biggest regrets... I had nowhere to store it and I was getting into road rallying, for which it wasn't really suitable, having already demolished a bridge with it on one twelve car event...
As a builder I gradually moved into plant and maintenance for the firm I worked for, looking after their Landrovers and excavating equipment. Lathe, machining and welding skills I acquired along the way.
My username is nothing to do with my taste for chicken, rather the likeness the KFC image shares with my friend who is also called Sanders, who has given me one of his old (1966), abandoned Landys to me to restore to the road, having stood in his wood for over ten years.
The steel parts are pretty bad, the back tub has been used for carrying fertiliser, which rots Aluminium, It has a hydraulic pump on the gearbox PTO. There may also be the hydraulic capstan winch which has been removed but maybe not... It had been fitted (crudely) with a Ford Transit York engine. Is there any call for Transit (York) to Series bell-housing adaptors, (I have two, the other adaptor is in an X reg RangeRover fitted with a York six cylinder engine). The chassis is pretty good on top but bad underneath. Much welding to do.
The Landrover is now completely dismantled, down to a bare chassis, bar for the front nearside spring which the front bolt is seized in the bush and I gave up on because my angle grinder battery went flat on me. It's ready to recover to home, piece by piece.
I have acquired a TDi 300 engine from which I intend to remove the turbo, give the age of the transmission and my intention to use my new toy for leisure rather than heavy haulage.
Having read several threads on the subject of using a TDi 300 as a Di 300 I feel comfortable that my choice will work. I have an ex REME neighbour who has two Series Landrovers, one with a Di 200, the other a Di 300, he is also currently fitting a Di 300 in a light ex-military truck, so I do have local experience and expertise on my doorstep.
A question please, what is the preferred way of handling images? I do have a Flicker account but I hate the threads with broken links which can happen with external storage.
