Hello from Brian in S.Wales

I’ve just joined the ranks of OAPs and now well into my second (or maybe my 3rd or even 4th) childhood and found myself with a bit of a lump sum from my pension annuity, so I’ve just got myself a 2004 Disco2 TD5 facelift (Landmark) in bog standard road trim and shiny Epsom Green paintwork; only 64400 on the clock and with most of the bells and whistles … Yeah, I know it’s just more stuff to go wrong but I must admit, I do like it.

I’m not exactly a 4x4 virgin, my last vehicle (no mention of the dreaded “T” word) was a VX Fronty Sport and my Landy experiences go way back to the 1970s and 80s when one of my previous employers insisted that I drive around in a Series 3 110 and visit all the mountain tops in South Wales in all weathers servicing the radio sites for “various government clients”. Yeah, I’m a retired radio engineer. I passed my basic RAF driving permit test on a half-ton lightweight S3 ragtop.

Got all the usual things to do when replacing a vehicle, as well as fitting new headlight/fog light/side light bulbs. Replacing the rear lights with canbus LEDs ‘cos they’re more reliable than filaments, EGR removal, getting my local garage (yeah, I do trust him) to replace the fluids and filters, check the chassis, suspension airbags, brakes and the rest of the underneath stuff; I’m getting a bit long in the tooth for scrambling about in the gutter under a car now.
Now, I know what you’re thinking; “Why would I want a Landrover if I don’t want to crawl under it and get dirty?” But hey, I can still fix some things standing up.
I think I’ll just enjoy it for the coming few years while keeping a close eye on the various areas which have shown themselves to be a bit problematic with other owners.

I look forward to being able to toss in the odd “pearl of wisdom” now and again and having somewhere I can come to share my experiences and dare I say … problems.:behindsofa:
Where am I? Down in South Wales, just north of Bridgend and the M4, well somebody has to come from here; I’ve put my location on the map, well, I'm trying to.

Pics of your old Landy exploits would be brilliant! Did you have any specialist kit?

My dad started out in the army in reme. He went all over east and west Germany doing radio tracking work back in the Cold War. All in a land rover apparently

Chunkymonkey; sorry but there aren't any pictures of my earlier exploits, back in those days all I was interested in was getting the job done and then home for some grub, and anyway, I didn't think that charging around the countryside in a Landy was that special at the time. No special kit, just a couple of Pye radios.
I was working for the Home Office and the "government clients" were the Old Bill, Fire Services and what used to be called " Government Communication Networks" which covered a multitude of sins from the radio kit on the Royal Train, the Prime Minister's car and the links between all the "secret" holes in the ground where the local government big chiefs were to run and hide if the "button" was pushed; but we could never get the stuff to work properly. It's a good thing that the Ruskies had the same kinds of problems at the time or we could all have really been in the pickies!

Update on the Disco:
It would seem that I have a manufacturing defect. After all the rain this weekend there's not one sign of wet or even damp patches inside the vehicle. Should I return it to Landrover to have the various leaks installed as "optional extras"?

It would seem that I have a manufacturing defect. After all the rain this weekend there's not one sign of wet or even damp patches inside the vehicle. Should I return it to Landrover to have the various leaks installed as "optional extras"?
