Hello from Brentford

Hello

After a lifetime of wanting one I now own my first Landy. It’s a very early series 3 88, fitted with a V8 from a defender. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet so all I’ve done really is take it for a spin and look at it quite a lot. It wee’d water on the way home but a new radiator cap sorted that thankfully. I’ve loads of questions and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I’ve owned a lot of old motors and do 90% myself of the work myself, but this has made me feel like a beginner again!
Chassis and bulkhead are good. Brakes are frightening in a bad way, but that’s drums for you. Engine pulls well but revs high on tick over. Looking to know where to buy spares and where to avoid. I live in Brentford in West London.

Looks tidy enough on the top.
The brakes are up to the job if in good nick and adjustment, but disc conversions are available.
You can wield a spanner you will work it out Plenty of help on here so you are in the right place.

As for parts, loads of good places, you will really need to identify what you have, how much has been changed.

Nice looking Landy! There have been quite a few thefts on London recently so make sure you invest in some decent security measures too.

Cheers yes. Bit of a worry. Any recommendations for securing an early series 3?. I don't want to go too mad but my basic steering lock is too generic and not very reassuring!

Nice Motor. A few minor points. The V8 won't have come from a Defender, as they were never fitted in them. It might have come from a V8 Ninety, or a Rover Sdi, or even a Disco if it is fuel injected.

The Series drum brakes are actually quite good, certainly not frightening. Go through them, replace shoes and wheel cylinders as necessary, bleed and adjust, they will work fine.

I come to Brentford quite often in the boat. One of the better areas of London to live in, I think.

Drum brakes should be fine, are they assisted? Maybe the vacuum isn't working

Forgot. About the parts, I usually order Series stuff from Paddock Motors. There are other online/mail order operations, but I don't find them much better.
Paddock will have most parts for the Series 3, but you will have to identify the engine accurately to order parts for that.

Thanks everyone. Yes I think it’s actually a RV8. I have the original 2.25 petrol in storage which is reassuring. The brakes are spongy. I need to lift the pedal and press again to get get good braking. They do brake in a straight line and no funny noises or weird feeling through the pedal, so suspect they need bleeding and adjusting. Thanks for all the tips and recommendations. Got some bed time reading with the manual (no not that one!!).

I know the place, although I usually go in the Brewery Tap myself. There is no shortage of pubs to choose from.

I am up the Line at the moment, near Watford, but will be back in Brentford late July, I should think.

Will PM you and maybe meet up then.
