I've always hankered after a Landrover and I've just broken my Landrover actual ownership duck so I thought I'd better register and say hello.

I've bought a 2002 Defender 90 Station wagon. Private sale and compared with lots of the Defenders on eBay etc it was a reasonable fair? price.

I crawled all over it and the chassis and cross members seem sound. A bit of surface rust but no advisories on the last MOT. I thinking of paying to have it Dinorit treated (I think that's how you spell it?)

The seller was a self confessed non-spanner person so there are a few niggly faults. The spare wheel swing arm rattles and clunks. (The bolt with the rubber stop is hanging off...!) A rear window slide is loose and the glass rattles. (An order to Woolies going on shortly) No clunks from the transmission and the engine seems tight. The brakes are nothing to write home about but I believe that's normal? Steering is tight and accurate. No huge leaks from anything but the normal damp oil from engine and gearbox etc.

High and low worked ok but I couldn't tell if the diff lock was working or not on the muddy track I tried it on. Should I have noticed? (I didn't think it was fair to try it on the tarmac.)

Other known faults are that the fuel gauge doesn't work and there's a side light out. There's bubbling at the base of the passenger door and the door doesn't seal very well (what's new?). However the air con and electric windows and everything else seem to function fine.

I'll try not to ask numpty questions.

A little research seems to indicate that the only way for me to tell if the diff lock is working is to jack a wheel up. I've also realised that no light came on when I moved the shift over to 'diff lock'.... any suggestions?
