I think it's a bit of a shame most of these replies are sarcastic and unhelpful. When I was considering buying my 300 tdi defender, I was put off by the high mileage. But after a bit of research about them, and the fact it was well cared for I took the plunge. It's now done over 250k with no major repairs, which is common for this engine. On the other end of the scale you have engines like the first freelander petrol engines ! Give the guy a break.
With respect I think you'll find a 300tdi defender is nowhere near as technically advanced or as expensive as far as repairs or parts as a range rover sport.

All I wanted was a bit of advice on if Diesel engine was any good as I didn't no much about them having never owned one what may be a stupid question for most of you it wasn't for me out of all the replies I got one that was off any help and that was off a guy from Blackpool you need to remember not all people are well up on there Land Rover that's why we ask so called stupid questions

That is not what you originally asked. Had you asked about the diesel engine compared to the petrol, then those with the knowledge could have advised or pointed you in the right direction. However, you asked a silly question: You asked unknown people, on the internet, to answer the unanswerable, about a vehicle they had never laid eyes on.. You got your helpful answer AFTER you asked a question that had a chance of being answered. So admit the answers you got originally were well deserved, suck it up and get ready to ask a lot more questions. Just remember to put a bit more information in them. ;)
We all do our best to help where we can, from those of us, like myself, who have learned through hard experience and following the advice of the gurus on here,to the Gurus themselves. All any of us want to do is help keep others' vehs on the road. However, none of us not even the Gurus have crystal balls or a direct line to the LR/RR gods. So as much information as possible always helps when asking a question.
Always remember, anyone giving help on here is doing it for free and those of us asking for help, are those who should remember to be at least a little humble. We should also remember to keep our sense of humour. It will be the only thing that gets us through LR/RR ownership and this site.

maraduke i think you have missed my point. Im not comparing the two engines, im saying that some engines have a reputation for doing very high mileages and others dont. Some engines can handly abuse and others cant etc etc. This guy is just after a bit of advice on a particular engine.

DIesel engines are normally trustworthy if well maintained, no matter how much paperwork you have for that moter I’m sorry to say you haven’t a clue what that engine has been through, only the person of persons that had it before you know that, it’s a decision that only You can make ( or in my case my wife ) trust you gut feeling, but still be prepared to spend money in it, look after it, and it might look after you,
