hi

firstly hi there and i am now glad i have found a site that has a wealth of information.

My 54 plate deisel freelander has problems starting sometimes and at idle stalls, as its starting to stall the yellow engine light comes on.

i try it a few times and then it starts, once it has stakked it usually starts again but again sometimes i have to try a few tierms to get it to run.

then when it is running it seems like it is going to stall and choke.

i believe the problem is and will get worse so i want to nip it in the bud

i have read a lot of threads on here and decided i am not quite sure so i hope someone can clear up my problem for me.

i took the ducting off so i could see the maf and there was quite a lot of oil in the duct (puddles) and all over the maf itself

i am wondering if it maybe a crankcase breather related problem after reading a lot of the threads

i hope someone can help soon

thanks in advance,

i will continue to search the 300 odd pages so i dont miss any possible info realting to my problem.

cheers

Adie

There is a engin breather filter on top of the engine in front of the air filter that it is now recomended to change every 12k to avoid build up of block pressure and oil pishing out of the turbo into inlet manifold etc..........

hi there and thanks for your reply,

i will start with that then, can they be cleaned and put back in?

do you think this may have anything to do wiotht he starting and stalling problem due to the maf becoming covered in oil?

again thanks in advance

Not sure why the maf is covered in oil as it is before the point that the crankcase breather vents its oily fumes into the inlet. Do you have the standard air filter or a K+N type that you can wash?

Definitely fit a new crankcase breather filter but you will always get some oil in the inlet duct, it is quite normal.

You should try cleaning the maf with an electrical spray cleaner or tape head cleaner.

i maybe wrong that its the maf as the sensor that i have that is covered in oil is the one in the air trunking at the front of the engine slightly to the left as you look at the car

i beileve the maf is behind the engine near the air filter is that corredect?

little confused now but i am sure iwill get there

thansk in advance

I think your on about the "stinky-plop" sensor that is on the left of the inlet manifold (that black plastic thing bolted onto engine).

The MAF is rear left hand side of the engine and you have to take that stupid air-filter arrangement job off to get to it.

hi thanks for yout reply and all the replies so far.

does the 'stinky plop' sensor look like a normal maf sensor in a round tubular housing?

what does it do this stinky plop sensor.

anyway i belive that is what i ahve that covered in oil n0ot the maf

cheers again

To the best of my knowledge the stinky plop sensor measures back pressure in the inlet manifold (stand to be corrected)

I cleaned it on the Mrs's car the other day, (did'nt make any difference! it was running well before mind) whilst blanking the EGR. Although there was a lot of oil, soot, creosote, marmite & snot in there the Maf was clean as a whistle.

Yes, behind the the engine, hidden by the air filter cover near the oil filler cap.
little confused now but i am sure iwill get there

For the moment just concentrate on changing the crankcase breather assembly and see what affect it has on your idle problem. If no improvement then I would do an injector leak test since you say you have difficulty starting. When was it last serviced? now may be a good time if it hasn't been done.

hi all good advise thanks.

i will check servicing book and more than likeley do a service just to be sure, starting with the crank breather

cheers
