Hi guys,

Just bought our 1st Discovery and loving it apart from one little problem. It drives fine, handles ok (with the turning circle of a bus! lol) and all in all is a great car but......

My lovely lady phoned me last night to tell me the lights won't turn off! we pulled the main fuse under the bonnet to stop the battery from dying overnight and this morning i put it back and removed the l and r side light fuses and that turned them off. all the other lights seem fine except the full beam won't stay on, you can flash them fine but they won't click and stay on.

Does this sound like a stalk problem rather than relay or wire loom? I am as mechanically able as Stephen Hawkins so please be gentle :)

Apart from that we're chuffed with our landy and hope to be in it for years to come!! with my good lady's back problems its easier to get into, comfortable to drive and when she lets me get it off road i forsee some great times in my future!! lol

Mike

Having found a thread about the same problem on here i think it might be the stalk, all i need to do now is find a replacement :)

Fingers crossed

looking at it i'm assuming the steering wheel needs to come off, is it an easy job to disconnect airbag etc?

Hi Mike, I don't think anyone on this forum is going to advise you that removing an airbag is an easy job, especially if you describe your mechanical knowledge/ability as being on a par with Stephen Hawking! It does sound like it is a stalk/switch problem but the wheel should not need to come off. Remove the cowling (plastic cover from around the wheel, it should be in two parts, top and bottom) and you should be able to see the stalk and it's connections- I haven't had to do this on my disco but I've done it on other cars so it should be the same. Failing that, pick up a Haynes manual or search the Discovery section of this forum for 'instrument stalk replacement' or words to that effect. A replacement stalk may be available on ebay if you're lucky, if not you'll have to find a breaker nearby or online.
You should appreciate that many users will not reply to problems posted in the welcome section, especially in your first post, we like to say hello and find out what you drive, where you are etc. Good luck with your Disco, it's well worth workign through the problems as ownership is enjoyable on the whole. :)

Thanks Discotony, I've got the cowling off and it seems to be held on with 2 screws which i've managed to undo. Removing it seems a tad trickier but i'm sure i'll work it out :)

As to my new baby, its an 'M' p[lated 300 tdi ES in white (not my first choice of colour but still looks quite good).starts first time every time without any effort and drives nicely. Grey leather interior, all (well most) electrics work including the twin sun roofs and its got a fitted dog guard which will be handy with our mutts!

Tyres fitted are scorpions?? which i've been told are a good choice. As i get to know it better i want to start to increase my poor mechanical knowledge and do more and more myself. Hopefully without all the computer doodads found on modern cars it'll be easier to problem solve with my new pride and joy.

right, found a stalk at the local breakers for £10, just need to work out how the old one comes off. can anyone enlighten me on how it comes off?

Go into the Discovery section and search 'indicator stalk' there are several threads, one of them specifically discusses removal due to the indicator self cancelling function not working (mine does this but I just live with it). The Haynes manual does not give any info at all, I've checked the body/electrical section and the steering section to no avail.

ok, like the weather here....things have changed. i tried a little wd40 on the stalk connections etc just to see if it could be coaxed into working for a while longer and now if i connect the plug into the stalk the lights come on even with the l/h and r/h fuses out!

I is confuddled :(
