Hello everyone I would be really grateful for your advice. We have a 1986 110, the only modification is power steering, other than that, it's original. The current problem started by it cutting out while driving. This happened a couple of times on a journey of around an hour but turning the key, it started again while running. Then just leaving the drive it happened again in the middle of the narrow street and wouldn't restart. So the local garage came and towed it in, had it for a couple of weeks, replaced the starter which had burnt out and reported that it started and ran every morning no problem, though they didn't actually drive it anywhere. So we paid and took it. Did a 15 minute journey, no problem. Drove it home again, no problem. Then tried to go out in it again a couple of hours later, wouldn't start. We do the warm up routine with the key for 20 secs from cold as usual, it turns over but won't fire. I have rung the garage and they will 'call me back' to be honest, I think they are fed up with us though they shouldn't be as we have spent enough! This is the second starter, also new battery, clutch, slave cylinder etc. Reading around on this forum and elsewhere, it seems to me to be a fuel problem, which was my gut feeling when it stalled on me in the narrow street here. Possibly the fuel shut off valve? Does this sound right? If so, is it a DIY job? Thanks in advance for help and advice x

Assuming its diesel, could be an air leak, a small one maybe, is there any visible leaks? Not too hot on defenders but my series had similar, cutting out, then not starting, but sometimes starting no problemo, the smallest amount of air would have been creeping in, i shoved compressed air down from the tank and it showed up on the distibutor pump, but this may not be your problem, but if its diesel that sounds like fuel! Ive had my starter glowing red... Still going!

So it's a 2.5 NA? Could be..
1) air ingress as said
2) dodgey 12v feed to fuel solenoid
3) dodgey solenoid.
2) is easiest to check first. When the ignition switch is in 'run' position you should have 12v at the terminal on the solenoid. If this 12v ceases to be...the engine will stop.
With the ignition switch in run, touching the feed wire to the solenoid should produce an audible 'click', this tells you the 12v are present in the absence of test gear.
Best buy a cheap digital multimeter , with a bit of practice they are very useful or a 12v bulb, some wire and clips and make a simple tester (or buy one!).
You could test the solenoid feed when it next stalls but give the wire and terminal feeding the solenoid a good looking at for now.
Report back with your findings.

Making a note of how it stops could help. A sudden stop like the ignition switch has been turned points to electrical (the 12v wire to the solenoid ) a spluttering and taking a little longer to stop is usually fuel.

This ^^^

Fuel issue usually while at higher revs, feeling underpowered, fading and picking up again.....like faffing around with the accelerator.

Fuel solinoid/12v feed like turning the key off.

Thanks everyone, yes it is diesel. The manual fuel pump feels stiff as well when trying to get diesel through the fuel lines. I don't know how it stopped when my partner was driving but when it happened to me, it just died, no sputtering or warning. I tried to start it again and still nothing, just turns over but no attempt to fire. It had a new fuel filter about a year ago and since then has probably done a couple of thousand miles. My instinct was fuel but as you can tell, I am no expert! But the sudden cut out seems more like solenoid going by what Flossie said? So perhaps should test that first. Thanks so much, will have a look on Saturday and report back x

Hello again. We have checked the fuel solenoid and it is reading 12V with the ignition on. We did get it to start and run for at least 10 minutes, then for decreasing numbers of minutes a few times before it cut out each time. It just stops, no sputtering or warning of any kind. Now it won't start at all again, turning over but not firing. I have videod it cutting out which I will try to upload. EDIT not able to! Also don't know if it's relevant but on turning ignition to start, while turning over, the multimeter reading off the fuel solenoid drops to 5.6 and lower. Be grateful for any further advice, thanks in advance.

Voltage drop whilst cranking might be entirely normal - but it sounds like either the supply to the solenoid, (IMHO most likely), or the solenoid itself. Yours may have become intolerant of this voltage drop due to its age!
Easiest way to check the supply to the solenoid is to disconnect LR's efforts, and connect it, thru a small fuse to the battery +ve with a bit of wire... I suggest you "make" a wander lead with a croc clip on one end ( for the battery ), and a spade connector on the other - and fuse holder in the middle. Use this to power the solenoid after you have turned the ignition on. Make sure LR's live feed is insulated to prevent a mess, before you start. It should now start on the key, and turn off by unclipping the croc clip...

(If you don't understand any of this, ask!)

Hi thanks so much, it seems it was the spade connector between the feed and the solenoid itself. Took it off, cleaned it, put it back. Now it runs and holds 12.8 volts, drops to 8.5 when starting. Thanks again for all your help. About to go for a spin x

Cool! glad its sorted:)

Ps should have said this was after doing what you said with croc clip and line direct to the battery. X

I keep such a lead made up in the drawer of "special tools" - (along with a blinking BIG hammer!:D) can save a lot of time and a lot of frustration too:D
