Hi,

I'm considering a P38 now but am slightly unsure what I might get myself into in terms of buying a car that could go wrong and be costly. I have a history of buying cars that break and cost a fortune to fix and don't want that again. So basically;

1) Just how reliable are the P38's overall? Are the later spec ones around 2000 any better?
2) What are the servicing costs like on them? Insurance/tax aside how pricey are they to run?
3) What are they like to drive? Are the 2.5D's frustrating slow to drive at all?

I enjoy having something different to drive but a 4x4 is quite a change from my usual sports cars although i'm feeling the need for more comfort and less performance now.

supremely comfortable, especially the HSE or DHSE models with lots of toys. diesels are very slow to get going, hopeless for speedy overtaking but cruise well at speed.
my 2001 is quite reliable - no serious breakdowns in 20k miles though little niggles like dodgy door locks.
for servicing i go to an independant LR specialist who charges about £400 for annual service and mot.
i don't find my diesel frustrating, but accept this is not a sports car. one more thing, range rovers are addictive and once they get under your skin you may well be addicted. at that point, they can very easily empty your wallet and your bank account.

hi i have recently bought a 4.0se lpg 1999 ,you must remember to try and get a pre 2001 model so the car tax increase wont empty your wallet also try to get an lpg rangerover as again will save you money,as with lots of gadgets in cars when buying make sure they all work or another costly job also tyres are good as the rangerover tyres are much more expensive than cars due to dimensions check all history any see if the current mot had an advisory issued if so ask to see it so you know whats gonna stop you getting it through an mot the year later ,
use you head and not your heart check check and check again.

hope this helps,good luck

i myself have just got me a 4.0 v8 also due to the need for something slower but bigger and more comftable.
but this weekend i have had nothing but hassle dont let this put you off im in a bad mood lol but i love the car as mentioned earlyer they are addictive the running cost's are stupid 15mpg and i really do drive it at 30mph do a diesel being slow maynot be an issue.but my problem's could be self inflicted due to a diy lpg conversion i will see when i find fault but upto you im feeling like fixing mine and selling up but as i said im fed up all weekend i have been tring to fix it and wed,thur,fri i had as holiday to converting to gas what's annoyed me is it was my 21st wed and i spent it stripping my rr good luk

unless you want to have a toy to tinker with then a range rover may not be the most practical. 15mpg-18mpg if your gentle, otherwise towing etc expect 13.5 mpg.
insurance-try nfu as I have low low excess, anyone else wanted £400, nfu £100. cheap enough to insure and great comfort.

Reasonable use of performance and brakes and they are great, try a two mile flying session on a country road and you'll get brake fade
(I know from personal experience)
