Hello everyone,

I brought a G reg 110 fitted with a 200tdi engine yesterday, it's been a while since I drove a landy and took me a while to get used to the steering and gears again! I used to have a series 3, but had to get rid of it due to money issues.

I became self employed working in coutnryside management in July, and decided it was time to replace my small van with a more capable vehicle - hoping I've made the right choice and it won't cost me too much to run!

My really stupid, basic, newbies question is - I had a play about in the mud today to check all the gears work in low ratio. However, I thought it would have to be in Neutral instead of Low or High for road driving? However when I put it in what I think is neutral, there is no drive. Should it be in High for standard road driving?

I've not driven a 110/Defender off road before, and my series had a different system, the red and yellow levers! So sorry for the basic question!

cheers,
Joe

landrover transfer gears explained....

normal road driving...... hi ratio

situations where either low speed or high torque is required...... lo ratio

situations where traction is very low i.e. mud ......... diff lock lo ratio

there is very little call for using diff lock hi ratio

Hey Catofthewoods, it's only a dumb question when you don't know the answer :)

I'm sure anyone who's never driven a 4x4 before would be asking the same question about gear levers/difflocks etc.

My guess is the majority of Landy owners use the 'extra' gear lever to hang their house keys from - I doubt they ever use it, or ever go 'off-road'..

thanks a lot everyone, yes I deserve everything I got for asking such a ridiculous, embarrassing, stooooopid question! I have driven off road before, in a Series 3 but a been a couple of years since I last got in one!

sypher, I'm also from the forest of dean, whereabouts are you? You involved in the landy club that meets at Soudley?

cheers
