Just signed up, and posted a query but I realise it's a bit rude not to introduce myself!
I've had three Land-rovers over the years starting with a 110 in 1983 (A142 MKR where are you now?) and over the last 10 years two Discos a series 1 and currently a Disco 2. Both were bought with about 160,000 miles on them the first one went to 230,000 before the tin worm attacked the chassis in a terminal manner. The current Disco's on 213,000. I had very little problems with either Disco and over the last two years we've driven across Europe to Crete on holiday.

Hi Eric I'm doing that journey next month. France/Germany/Austria/Hungary/Croatia/Greece and onto ferry at Piraeus. It's been rebooked as I mislaid my passport on Friday. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Ned,
We go through Serbia and Macedonia (don't call it Macedonia in Greece) instead of Croatia. No real problems we've done the trip twice now with no real issues. Don't forget to get to get vignettes for the Austrian and Hungarian motorway networks otherwise you'll get stung with a fine. I got caught in Austria the first year! Apart from that it's all straight forward except for Piraeus itself, it's a dreadful place there's nowhere to park and you'll be surrounded by motorcycles passing you on both sides, very heavy traffic. If you're going to Crete the ferry berth is at Gate 3 at the far end of the harbour periphery road there's parking inside the port where you pick up your tickets.

Any other queries you can think of contact me again Eric

Thanks very much Eric that is a huge help. I know about the Macedoniaan thing as we've had a place there for ten years and have a few Macedonian friends. I'm going in my transit rather than 'Don' the defender to clear personal effects before selling up later this year. No idea how long it will take to sell.

Hi Eric, I was wondering where you take your journey breaks after Austria and any reasons why. I'm having trouble trying to imagine where I might stop other than at a mates near Vienna. Thanks for any pointers. My eurotunnel is early morning on the 3rd may and my piraeus ferry is 5th May 21:00. Two drivers taking turns. Doable?

Afternoon Ned,
It's about 2,000 miles from the shuttle to Piraeus so you've got to to do a fair few miles in the time you've got. I will leave it to you to decide, I guess it is doable but you've got the Serbian and Macedonian borders to cross (non EU) and there have been quite long queues there when we've been through the last two years. In addition I don't know about your insurance but ours doesn't cover Serbia or Macedonia and in both countries we were asked either for a green card at the border or required to buy cover there and then at the border post. This means more delays.
We take between five and six days, but we're retired and are away for about five weeks in all. We stay in hotels all the way down. After Austria there is a good if basic hotel at the Hungarian border. In Serbia there's a motel called Motel Manjic on the motorway its the only one for miles and has adverts on all the motorway bridges. There's fuel available there as well. Although Serbia has its own currency (Dinars) they accept euros and VISA. Once you get into Greece there's a really good hotel in Katerine (Northern Greece) just off the motorway called the Park Hotel. it comes up on your Sat Nav. I don't think with your schedule though that you'll be able to stop!
I know that it's up to you, but do you think you could take another day? I know Anek lines are very good at changing bookings. We left five days late last year and they changed the booking with no extra charges.
When you get to Pireas it's Gate 3 into the port which is at the far end of the road that runs along the outside of the docks in the port area the ticket office is on the right about 50 yards inside the gate.
Best of luck on your trip, we're off next Wednesday (2nd) I"ve sold my Disco (another mistake I think) and we've now got a pale silver blue Freelander, give us a wave as you zoooooom past. Our ferry's 21:00 on the 9th.

I don't where you are in Crete. We're at the Mike Hotel in Male.

Regards Eric.

Thank you very much Eric for the extensive reply. Maybe I must re book the ferry outbound. Our place is overlooking Almyrida village/beach in the province of Chania on the left of the island looking down. I'm going to be there until the ferry back out on the 12th. Not sure how far Male is. Last ten years everytime I go there I'm doing maintenance and having very little holiday. Seriously stupid investment in hindsight. Lovely island and people though! Thank you again.

A142 MKR is Sorned so still around ;)

Last MOT ran out 14th September 2017 :D
Morning Henry, thanks for taking the time to reply. I had checked myself regarding the MoT and SORN situation. I suppose I was vaguely hoping for a reply saying; 'I own it and live just down the road'. I don't really want it back, but I rebuilt it from an insurance write off from a breakers in the early 80's and like all my vehicles I get attached to them and am always reluctant to sell.

Regards Eric

Morning Ned,
Maleme is about 15 miles West from Chania city on the coast road.

Ah Maleme, had no idea where Male was!
I'll push the ferry back by a day. Yes I know Maleme. The germans ended up with the best cemetary. I'll pm my uk number to you before departure so if you come Almyrida way you can drop by for tea and biscuits if you wish:) I will look out for a pale silver blue freelander too!

Hello Ned,
Thanks for the tea and biscuits offer we'd like that.
Re the German cemetery, the invasion of Crete in '41 is the reason we visit the island. My Father was on the island when the Germans invaded. He was lucky enough to escape from Sfakia.
Mike Hotel, where we stay is the HQ for the Crete Veterans, Families and Friends organisation.
Sorry about 'Male' (sic), finger trouble
Eric

No Problem. Tea and biscuits on the terrace rather than the lawn:)
Interesting to know why you visit the island. Amazing amount of history there both ancient and modern.
We will be sad to sell our place for sure. BTW I'm driving in my Ford Transit rather than my Defender to get the personal effects out. I really wish it was my defender though!
