Had problems with heavy steering on my 03 TD5-persisted despite new pump, reconditioned box-checking all joints and hoses-decided to remove the hose between reservoir and pump and a friend suggested siphoning off the fluid first-what did we find?- a small gauze blocked by what appeared to be iron filings-cleaned it out and hey presto!-I am surprised not to have read of this potential hazard in the manual or any of the forums I've scoured in the past few months-I pass it on hoping to save someone a lot of grief and £600!

Didn't need to take pipe off-the problem was visible on peering into the empty reservoir-there is a screwhead in the bottom holding what appears to be a gauze filter and we washed out with a drop of diesel to remove the sediment which we assume came from a failed pump changed about 18/12 ago but the problem had recurred over the subsequent month-initially heavy at low revs and a local garage said it was a stiff joint on the connecting rod but changing it made no difference and we went through the steering components bit by bit without any success until discovering the real problem and then-magic!

Hello Stevie,
Came across your post after a search.

Just got a Disco 2 after 9 years of a Disco 1.
Only problem is Heavy steering at low speed.
From your post It looks quite a simple job to check this filter.
And from other comments seems to self bleed.
After you have now done the job I am asking when you loosen the screw inside the container do you still have to loosen the hose to get at the filter to clean it.
I am a great believer at doing the simple things first.

Thanks
