Hi
Surprise surprise the heater matrix is dead, i am pretty sure as when the engine is running lots of pink water is escaping into the drivers side footwell and it blows wet air onto the screen, mainly on the drivers side.
A local landy place recons they only replace a matrix if everthing else is changed as well. what would need changing if i gave the heater system a full overhaul. would i need the flappers etc etc, what would it cost to buy this lot and get it fitted.
whats the general consensus is it worth getting it done properly once.
cheers

Lets assume you've got a P38 V8 of some description. First thing is be careful of driving it with a coolant leak. The cooling system is under pressure so any weak spots will soon be exposed. If you allow the engine to over heat you will invite all manner of horrible stuff to your door. Best to fix it sooner than later.

The "consumable" components on the wet side are the water pump, thermostat, main radiator and the heater matrix. The pipes into the heater matrix are sealed with two 'O' rings which perish over time resulting in coolant leaking into the right hand footwell. This may well be your problem rather than the matrix. However when i replaced the O rings on mine it turned out the matrix was also split. Both can be changed for less than £50 but you need to pull the dashboard out of the car which took me about 3 hrs. There are short cuts but you effectively end up butchering your car so the choice is yours.
You can check the main Rad for cold spots which would indicate blockage but a new Rad can be picked up off eBay for about £100 with a 2 year warrenty.

on the dry side you have the blend motors and two fans not to mention the HVAC ECU. Blend motors are a regular cause of distress. There are 3 motors, one each for controlling the temp on each side and one to change where it blows. Again sometimes it is the flaps that the motors drive that stick however if you have the dash out you can see it all working to your satisfaction.

If the HVAC display has the cheque book symbol in the right hand corner then I suggest you take it to someone who can read the codes before you start swapping anything as this will give you a head start.

Now don't forget the A/C but that is a whole different chapter...
