Don’t know about series 2 but on my petrol series 3 the valve goes next to thermostat the nipple at the waterway connection at rear right hand side of head. Then from valve to heater matrix to (l would say) top most connection and from other heater matrix connection to the nipple at rear of head. I must say l do not have or know about the flat heater unit. Hope this helps.

S2 tap is on back left top of cyl head, tap hose to heater stub then heater return hose to water pump
Pics from a 59 with 2 litre diesel, but they are all going to be along the same lines

Thanks, another pic of mine from the top, you can see heater hoses just to the left of coil, which one goes to tap at front and which one goes to rear/? , I have not got tap or rear pipe fitted yet.

You can connect the heater any way round as it’s just a loop set up.
Pipe the heater up so the pipes look neat ;)

As Phil says it really dont matter which way pipes connected, I now have a tdi in the car and the heater is plumbed up the same way.
The tap is only there to keep the heat out of the car come summer time.

Done it this way, got a solid pipe off a mate, think it should be ok.
