Heater control cables

Has any one ever tried using anything other than the real thing here? It looks to me like a push bike brake cable.

Don't see why you couldn't, so long as the length is correct.

I priced them with my local dealer...£14+vat. I need one for the temp control, and one for the fan/blower. Will have a look at brake cable an see if I can make one work. As you say tho, length might be an issue.

Don't forget that the original cables allow to you push AND pull, it is this action that often fails.
The clamp that secures the cable sheath to the lever bracket allows the sheath to slide through it over time so when you think you are operating the flaps you are in fact doing nothing at all. Occasional lubrication of the cable inner is not a waste of time and making sure the cables are adjusted & secured correctly and doing what they are meant to do would solve the vast majority of heater related problems (a new thermostat and sort out of the cooling system would sort out most of the remainder!).

Had a problem with my cable that controls fan and amount of vent. The outer cable was damaged so it would work. Put a couple of layers of heat shrink on it...works a treat! Cheers and happy xmas.

Cables need to be solid, as Litch said "push and pull". If you don't you will be able to take it from heat to cool but not to from cool to heat.

Bike cables wouldn't work, the wire is too thin to push. The wire inside the heater cables is actually quite sturdy

He has indeed!!!! I forgot about this. The guys are correct on this one. Bike cable did not work, as these are designed for pull only. Got cables off a scraper and it was good to go. On a plus note......believe it or not, my heater is toasty.
