Hi

I’m new to this site so can anyone help.
I have a 04 diesel defender 110. When I push the heater switch down I get get heat or cool air depending on my setting but recently when I push the lever fully down to get full heat it stops. Any suggestions.
Also light switch won’t turn my headlights off anymore. I can only now do this with the ignition. I can still turn the side lights off though. Any ideas?? Thanks Brucie

Not sure about those new fangled 2004 Defenders, but the lights on my 96 model are fed directly through the switch. ie the full current load for the lights goes through the switch and not a relay. The switch contacts degrade, resistance goes up, they get hot and melt. Funny stuff happens like melt in the on position. 2004 models probably have the same switch but not sure.
Do you mean the fan stops or the heat stops?

Thanks for the help. I think switch will be the first call. Ref heater, it blows heat on settings 1-3 then inserting 4 (full blast) nothing happens

Not sure what you mean by inserting 4. Again, if they use the same switch it's based on a lever. IIRC the lever does something basic like slide a small brass ball from one notch to the next. Sounds like the notch for full on is not connecting. Might just need a clean. On my 96 300Tdi, the lever switch doesn't take much getting off.

Sorry , typo. Setting no . 4 it should read, or in the fully down position. As you say, probably just a clean. Hopefully just remove part of the cowling to access this??

Cowling?

You can see the screws on the side of my instrument binnacle in this pic. You might need to take the screws out of the other side too. There's a screw underneath, one on each side, anorl.

I’m wondering if the heater is attached to a cable which has come become stretched/dislodges/broken. I’m looking for an exploded drawing of the set up.
Thanks Brucie

Here's my heater box. There are two control cables that go to it. You can only see one here. The other is behind the two pipes top left. These can be problematic and worth checking.
