i am considering fitting a heated windscreen to our disco td5 can anybody
help me locate the cables that lead up to the windscreen, the cables are at
the switch on the dash where are the others!!!

Hiya John,

My only word of caution is that I have heard that it can affect GPS
reception. If this is not an issue I am sure someone will be along soon to
help. I haven't got a clue.

That's odd it has no effect on my navman or tomtom GPS.

I bought an external magnetic stick on roof aerial in
the hope that it would speed up the cold start on my
PDA based TomTom 5 but, although I now get big strong
bars on the signal strength display that I didn't get
behind the '98 HSE heated screen, it doesn't really
lock in any faster.

But I paid good money for that aerial so I plug it in
everytime regardless...

The cables ought to be visible in the scuttle area with the bonnet open, a
"fixed" plug at either side of the vehicle. I take it you are aware that it
needs to go on Testbook or Rovacom or similar to talk to the BCU and tell it
that it now has a heated screen before it'll work?

Tomtom on my PDA takes ages to get itself started too.. however,
memorymap on the same PDA gets a gps signal and a position reading
almost instantly.
TomTom must do something silly with its GPS readings.

heard lots of conflicting stories about this matter from the net. seems that some peeps are affected whilst for others it has no effect.

the TT i use is not affected at all, on a car with a heated screen.

In my case it's not TomTom but the plug in card. I suspect that
it won't lock in while it's moving. I can force it to lock by going
into its own software and 'clicking' the cold start button so I suspect
Tomtom is just waiting for it to lock not forcing the issue.
Either way the heated screen does make a difference to the signal
but not quite enough to stop things working.

<sulk>It's just another detestable gadget that I happily lived for decades
without that has now messed with my mind so I think it is indispensable.
