Just had a 'heated' conversation with my uncle who says that you can't drive a car into standing water and that a snorkel is only for dust (his reasoning that they were only for the dust when he worked out in Arabia). He says it will stop the fan turning and crack the engine block from the change in temperature?!? Surely this isn't true?!? This is a conversation at the table and I am needing some backup here! I said that it is done all the time. He is saying that whenever a car is waded it had just been started and any other videos are faked! Need some technical backup here. Sadly he is an engineer and need some know how ammo!

But the sudden change in temperature from the water cracking the engine block?!?

S

the outside of the engine block is considerably cooler than the internals, which are cooled by water, the outside of the block isnt hot enough to crack

Surely you can run an engine for 100 miles then cross a river over the bonnet for say, 100 metres, and not be in trouble? Or no?

Thanks guys.

The table does involve a Thai cat, Cold beers and a pool!

So sorry, obviously I meant 'river crossing' and not a motor vehicle with a blue badge;)

Haha. He's looking over my shoulder and saying that he has a valid point. Maybe he does! It's a sad battle to lose! I would have never have thought that was a concern! Rats.
