Heated steering wheel RR 4.4TDV8 2012

Evening all.

New member here, hello everyone.

I have an issue with my steering wheel, the heater doesn't work. Checked the fuse and it was missing, put a new 10A fuse in and still nothing. I would like to remove the airbag to check the element for continuity but am concerned about setting the airbag off in my face. Is it ok to disconnect the battery, just the negative lead, will it damage anything? I have read that you have to wait 20mins for the system to power down.
Any help would be appreciated.

If the light comes on briefly then goes off, it's likely the heater element, from what I've seen and read
