I'm having a bit of trouble with the engine overheating. I knew I was losing a bit of water every week (maybe half a pint or so) but nothing obvious so I just monitored the situation. Out a couple of weeks back the red temperature guage light came on without warning (the temp was shown as normal just before). I pulled over and lifted the bonnet, nothing! So I restarted and carried on. Then the heater stopped working which is a sure sign the water level was too low. Unfortunately the only water I had on board was a windscreen washer mix but I thought this was better than nothing so I topped up with that.
On inspection today the leak is still not obvious but after removing the engine cover, the wiring loom which was running at the front left corner of the block (looking from the driver's seat) showed signs of heat damage. I've re-routed it away from the block and re insulated the loom with tape and wrapped it in insulating silverised matting.
Question?
1- should I totally drain and refill the coolant to remove the 'windscreen washer' contaminant
2- any faults to look for from the damaged wiring (the individual wires were all intact but the outer was melted and brittle
3- where are the usual 'leaks' in the coolant system

thanks folks!
