Headlights not working on series 3 after spark

Thanks I'll have a look in the morning , I've already switched the bullet connectors from the black red (no power) to the blue white in front of the radiator and headlights did come on when I put full beam on but this surely only confirms that the black/ red wire doesn't however power to it .

However when I put side light wire into back of switch where headlight wire currently positioned sidelights come on so it's not the power to the switch. I'll definitely try the column switch tomorrow when I get the battery recharged as it died due to me trying to get lights to work all day

Could the fact that land rover seems to work without any fuses be anything obvious ?

Blackburn , I've followed your advice and I think I understand , I have taken cowling off steering column , connected red/blue wire to blue wire (both above indicator stalk , I used a paperclip) and the lights did come on ! I had to replace the stalk a while back because I'd bent the copper terminals to far when trying to adjust , I'll be careful and get back to you , thanks again
 
Ok I have cleaned connections and it doesnt make any difference ,could I solder a connection between the 2 wires at the point where they meet at the top of the steering column , ive tried this with a paperclip (very temporary just to test , no intention of using a paperclip!) and all the functions work correctly.
 
if you solder a wire across dips will be on as soon as you put lights on and when you go to mains all lights will be on , not sure how your wiring will cope with the double load ie much higher current.
Probably would not pass MOT test.
You need to fit relays so that your replacement column switch only takes a light load.

Your best bet is to re-wire with new cabling and fit relays, it'll help to protect your circuits in the future.

I would go back to the start of the problem, the spark at the dash where 2 wires touched. Was one of these wires something to do with the lights? Why were they bare? Maybe they was connected poorly and came undone. Try connecting a test bulb to the wire in question and turn the lights on to see if it is a feed to the headlamps (don't forget to Earth the bulb as well).

I've solved the problem , as mentioned it was the indicator stalk , some of the connections were missing by less than a mm , spent hrs bending the connection so it just touched , however was a pain because it has to miss/touch so many other connections at the same time . I'm assuming the spark was unrelated so I'm taping the wire off and as far as I can see all is good , thanks for your help .

I have a Land Rover Santana 1979 108 series 3 and I am in the process of rewiring the dash and front end of it
Most of the wiring at some point has been chewed by rats where it has stood for some time
I have removed the dash and exposed all the wiring in and behind the dash only to find all sort of bodgery from passed owners.
I have removed the wires from the brake switch and from the solanoide and Earth points on the chassis that’s where the rat chewed it.
Apart from that all seems ok there wires hanging off behind the dash around the switch area and not connected
Going to the front behind the grill I find someone has put a doublr relay for the head lights I don’t think that should be there at all and I don’t no why it’s there ? Should it be?
I have got a new wire loom from autosparks so am going to take out the old loom and check it against the new one before putting it in
Any advice would very appreciated

Originally, series landrovers didn't have relays for the headlamps, or anything else but many owners fit them nowadays to help protect the old wiring from high current especially if they have fitted higher wattage bulbs.
